I was just trying to follow the logic...I assumed that if cP = cSt x s.g., and for 5w30, cP=5300 @ -30C and cSt=6400 @ 40C, then s.g = cP/cST = 5300/6400 = 0.828.

Then, I assumed (again, probably incorrectly) that if 10w30 has a s.g. of .862 according to the PDS, then cP = cSt * sg = 6600 x 0.862 = 5689, while the PDS said the cP was 3500 @ -25C. It doesn't look right, but it's probably just my own ignorance.

I'm probably all screwed up on this, but I was just trying to put the pieces together.

Please refer to the SAE J300 chart before making so many post based on confusion on how the grades are measured. There is a copy available on the start page unde "viscosity"

As for Trop Artic I think it is an excellent value and I have a couple of yesrs worth stocked up and will stock up on more @ 1.44

C'mon guys, don't be so quick to jump in and admonish. If you'll review, my original intent was simply to understand why there was such a drastic difference between the cP numbers of TA 5w30 vs. the other two weights...pretty significant. I wasn't asking to be educated on everything having to do with viscosity, although it may have gotten in to some of that. The discussion just evolved into a mathematics question between cP, cSt, and sg, as well as oil clarity, etc.

As for the SAE J300 chart, I did a search of the whole web site and couldn't find it...I'm not saying it's not there, only that it didn't come up on my search. I also could not find the "viscosity" link you said was on the start page. Again, it may have been there, but I could not find it. If you could please point me in the direction of these two pieces of information (link?), I would greatly appreciate it.

I also read the forum rules, and I saw that this forum was here for the "free exchange of ideas." Is it really reasonable for us to know how every thread is going to evolve, and to stop and look up every possible research item for fear of someone coming in and scolding us for not referring to some unknown or hard-to-find data? Is it reasonable to think that over a period of years and 10's or 100's of thousands of posts that some topics and questions may actually get repeated?

I understand no one wants to have to repeat basic information to newbies, and I personally try very hard not to submit things that I can answer myself. I'm not trying to be overly sensitive either, but I want to be able to chat freely with others without feeling like big brother is watching.

But hey, it's all good, right?

Another observation (whether or not it's "interesting" is subject to readers' personal interpretation...): I'm nearly 2,600 miles into my first interval with T/A 10w30 and it's still difficult to see the oil film demarcation on the dipstick when I check the level. I'd always subscribed to the belief that oil that "dirties" quickly, is an oil whose detergent/dispersant package was doing its job properly. So, I'm wondering - does this T/A stuff have a weak detergent/dispersant package or is the base oil blend so stable under engine operation that it doesn't tax the detergent/dispersant package with partially oxidized oil molecule fragments to the degree we're accustomed to seeing with a conventional or syn-blend motor oil? Opinions invited. (Just remember what they say about "opinions"...

I'm not trying to jump on you buddy. I tried to point out why there is a difference between the numbers! Trop Artic 10w30 just has fantastic CCS and MRV numbers along with viscosity index. That is why the numbers are different. It is in fact quite similar to the 5w30. They must add just a hair more viscosity index improver to their 10w30 brew to get 5w30.

I'd say weak add pack. the last time my oil stayed that clean was on Super Tech syn, with has weak add pack. GC got dirty real quick.

I am simply trying to point you to the information that will help you understand why the numbers in the PDS are what they are. It is quite simple and I believe it has been explained. 5w oils are measured at -30c while 10w's are measured at -25c. This being a multivisc oil the operating viscosity is that of a 30w while the cold cranking viscosity is indicated by either 5w or 10w which each have a different testing parameter at differnt temperatures. Please look at the chart I put in the link which I found in google typing "sae j300"

I believe that is as helpfull as I can get at this hour of the night and this thread.

The 5w30 low temperature cranking viscosity tends to run in the 5500 to 5800 cP range for many conventional brands.

The 5W-20 low temp numbers run in a 4800 to 5300 cP range.

5w30's typically have a slightly heavier blend of base oils to meet the 30 weight grade high temp requirements. This reduces performance on the cold temp end.

Trop Artic has good cold crank numbers due to the presence of Grp III in the formulation and the favorable effects of pour point depressants on Grp III base oils.

Blue, are you sure about that? I thought it was the other way around -- 5W starts out thinner [than a 10W] and VIIs are added to get the 30wt spect at 100c. if the 5W started out thicker, it would always be thicker and they might as well swap bottles with the 10W - unless of course the 5W base has more GIII in it for the low temp spec, which may be the case.

no reason to be concerned. TA will protect just fine, it just may not be cleaning much, and if you've been dilligent with your oil maintenance then you're prolly not too dirty to begin with at 37k miles. a good test would be to add a few oz of LC20 and see what happens. if the oil turns dark in a few hundred miles then you may have some varnish/deposits in there. also look inside your oil filler cap.

Relax. I left my question open-ended to draw comments. My gut feeling is the ConocoPhillips synthetic blends have both a very good detergent/dispersant package and plenty of oxidation-stable Group III base oil content. There are those who know how to read product data sheet entries and recognize good tribology when they see it, and there are those who judge motor oil strictly on the basis of its selling price. ("If it's cheap, it can't be any good." and, "For just a buck a quart more, you can get a qualtiy motor oil." Talk about blind assumptions!) C'mon, people - those of you who've already gotten used oil analysis on these oils, post 'em! The oil filler cap looks good right now, but I haven't tried the LC...guess that wouldn't hurt. I DID, however, order my Blackstone kit yesterday.

I will probably be sending mine (TA 5w30 Syn Blend) in to Blackstone in a month or so and will promptly post my used oil analysis for feedback...I'm dying to know how it looks!

With regard to TA 5w30 versus 10w30, IIRC a while back it was stated to use the 10w30 because it was more shear stable?

That's exactly why we need to see used oil analysis on unadulterated T/A 5w30. Demonstrate with a run whether or not it's base stocks and additive pack are stable in use to settle these questions.
