STP has it's uses.

In a worn out engine to thicken up the oil when an oil change for thicker base oil is not desired.

Critique STP if you wish but for it's intended application it just works.

It is probably less useful today than 30 years ago however.
And I would not routinely run STP in any modern engine, or properly functioning antique for that matter.
The use of large doses of polymers (STP) would shorten the life of any engine that is not already worn out IMHO. The long term use of STP would likely lead to varnish and sludge build up.
 
If you are using 5w30 and changing your oil just drop in 10W-40 and forget it. If you are using 20W-50 already then maybe.

It does make a good assembly lube though. Aircraft guys use it 50/50 with 20W-50 for reassembling engines.

Read somewhere that Jasper was using Lucas for assembly lube. Not a bad deal for limited use like that.

What makes you say that? I put a bottle in with GC in my BMW cus its like 200 degrees out here. And my sump is 7 qts soo...
 
I know of someone that put STP Oil Treatment into a slipping Powerglide that was in a '61 Chevy. Firmed the shifts right up.

I once put a drop of STP into a container of Berryman B-12. The STP hardened up like a rubber ball almost instantly.

Why do you want thick polymer goo in your engine? If you want thick oil, buy it that way.
 
I see what youre saying. Im using GC but I just feel that its too thin sometimes. And I wanted something to protect my engine since it has 180k and Florida weather is so hot.

I noticed that the engine runs smoother and a tad quieter. But it also seems like the oil light takes an extra half second to shut off.

After reading here I should of put half the bottle, or bought the 4-cyl formula. Im considering dumping my 7 quarts of GC.
 
Man listen to Tempest. If you want thick oil, use thick oil. There's no weather too hot for GC in Florida. Heck, you've got ideal conditions. No extended warm up period....
 
Mjfx. GC is not thin. It has a viscosity of 12.1 at 100 C.
It is near a 40 weight. If you like STP, just use a 1/4
bottle which should put you in the low 40 weight range. A full
bottle will make your oil a 50 weight.
 
All STP oil treatment is is just a viscosity thickener. Thicker oil has a tendency to quiet down noisy engine parts.

I don't recommend using it at all.
