My STLE colleague verifies that STP additive is simply additional VI with a ZDDP boost for the oil.

Why do people use it instead of buying oil with the proper viscosity?... probably good marketing.

A customer at the dealership I worked at pourred some in his old GM 3800 and sat back to enjoy the symphony of rod knock. Turns out you should never pour STP in a cold engine when the temps are hovering around -10. It globs up around the pickup tube and oil starvation follows closely behind.

Well, my stock advice on STP oil treatment is go red, that is use the 4-cylinder stuff. Same as the blue bottle, but much thinner. Still thick though.

If you really want zddp, there are likely better alternatives.

Or if it's thickening you're after, mix in a bottle of synthetic 20w50, preferably PAO (Synpower 20w50 MSDS shows PAO cas number).

Motor Honey, Lucas OS, etc are pretty much the same goo!

I would not use in the winter up here in the north woods.

I used STP as transaxle lube back in my VW days in the 70's
It made for easier shifting in the winter and less noise in hot weather. I would also clear up whines and other high pitch sounds from the transaxle.

What do you all know about the stp in the white bottle with a black label, says oil stabilizer.

Is the white bottle with the pointed spout better additives than the red or blue?

Seems I shook the white STP bottle and it is not thick like the traditional STP. If the white has zddp, then go for it.

We used STP back in the 60's. Wouldn't go back to it now unless I had an old oil burner that I didn't want to fix. It did help to slow the oil consumption.

Exactly what I did. I was surprised that it sounded like regular oil, not like their blue bottle treatment or Lucas.

works well on parts when assembling and engine, I've used it in that manner before and it worked well.

The white bottle "Oil Stabilizer" is a much thinner concoction than the other motor goo. Nice mix of zddp and calcium, IIRC. If that's what you need....

Would the STP Oil Stabilizer be a good substitute for VSOT which was discontinued?

Try a search for the VOA. It's on here somewhere. As for a good sub for VSOT, well, there's no moly in it. You should really question whether you need it at all. A nice robust HDEO might be better and easier to use.
