I like your style Johnny!

3K oil chanes are a waste of money for MOST people . Even when I was young and ignorant ( teenager ) I changed oil and filter at 4K . Now I run synthetic and go longer .

NEVER an oil related failure in over 35 years . I'm sticking with what works for me .

Well, 4k *was* a long interval with Oils of Olde, especially with dino.

Yes, but so was 10k/year when the Oils of Olde were on the island rack. You had to live in California to drive that much back in the 70's as a common consumer. That's why 100k was such a marvel with a 60's through pre-unleaded fueled car.

I don't know what to tell you about that . Always changed the filter and kept a clean air filter in them . Never a problem .
Personally , I think a lot of folks here are a little too anal about oils and filters . Every one of my vehicles ran a FRAM filter and sometimes I got busy and ran the oil out to 5k . Somehow we survived . But , to each his own , right ?

Fram eventually switched the the cardboard end-caps, they didn't always have them. It's very likely that the filters you were using "back then" still had the metal end-caps.

Here is a thread and photos of OLD (20 PLUS year old) Fram filter.

Old Fram filter thread

Comments?

I've used Frams for many many years. Cut open EVERY filter and never an issue.

Lucky?

Our textbooks were from the late 70's and had pics of metal endcaps on the filters. I was thinking 60's and 70's FRAM filters :D Sounds like they switched in the 80's perhaps? 20 years to me isn't that old, that's how old my one car is :)

That filter in the thread was made between 1973 to 1983. So the youngest it could be is 25 to 35 years old.

Quote from the thread:

Quote:
But it was before 1983 as this is the year that "The Allied Corporation acquired Bendix. In the 1983 merger, the three brand names FRAM®, Bendix, and Autolite became part of Allied Automotive, one of the five business sectors of Allied Corporation."

So the filter above was built between 1973 and 1983.

I doubt Bendix changed it from whoever they bought it from.

Maybe some of your books showed a different model, but I can tell you every Fram I've cut open has looked like the one in the photo.. (with out the rust in the can)

Like I've said, the Fram filters work and have been built like they are now for a LONG time...

Take care, bill

I don't know when Fram went to the "cardboard" end cap, but 20 years isn't all that long a time in my perception of things. We had a brief blip of compressed evolution/revolution at the turn of the century.
