i just bought a leftover 2010 sonata 2.4 four cyl.my 03 had a 2.7v6 but they both take the same oil filter.i bought a st3593a filter at wal mart.how do i tell if it is an ecore?it says made in the usa and looks like a metal tube in it.i do not see any plastic cage.it seems well made.thanks for any input.

If you are trying to avoid ecore filters, you may want to check each one before you buy. It sure sounds like you have the classic design, but the dealer I buy my OEM filters and parts from has a cut-away comparing the OEM filters to an ecore of the same size. So it appears that there are ecore filters available for your engine.

If you get excess engine noise, especially valve train noise, you might want to switch back to the OEM filter. There is a TSB on noise with aftermarket filters for some Hyundai engines. I think the problem is mostly resolved in the after market, and it didn't mention a specific brand of filters. However, if you go in to the dealer with noise complaints and they see an aftermarket filter, they will probably tell you to try an OEM filter.

Apparently, some aftermarket filters have been sold with improper specifications for the engine. If the filter really does meet the proper specifications, there should be no issues. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing just by looking at it.

These engines have issues running cheap oil filter. So, pay attention to start-up knock and running engine noises. ADBV/BPV performance is a must.

Use an OEM filter or a quality built filter. The dealer wants $5 for a filter. Fram wants $9 for their Hyundai/Kia specific orange can...PN PH9688 to address the issue. Other brands don't have the problem.
