I'm going to be picking up my new SRT-4 tomorrow. anyone know what Dodge uses for factory oil fill?

Thanks.

its a thin weight conventional oil to promote rapid break-in, in 5w30 visc. with lots of green dye. It ain't worth keeping the factory oil more than 600 miles, but don't go synthetic until the 2000-3000 mile mark.

no its the Viper that has Mobil 1 10w30 factory fill, and they get the oil cap stipulating that. The SRT-4 does not come with Mobi1l from the factory, and it is not factory recommended. But the owner's manual recommendeds synthetic oil and Mobil 1 for aggressive driving conditions. I have the Viper oil cap for my SRT-4 which I bought. DCX got their hands slapped by the EPA or some similar agency on the SRT-4 because their fuel economy certification was done with conventional 5w30 oil and that is supposed the be the recommended oil and viscosity listed in the owners manual and delivered on the vehicle. DCX had to send out addendums to the owners manual stipulating this fact. So they are not allowed to recommend a different oil than what was used for fuel economy certification.

The next DCX vehicle to come with Mobil 1 factory fill is likely to be the Crossfire SRT-6 which will use their 0w-40. I have an advertisement flyer from Mobil 1 from my dealership and it lists the SRT-6 as the next vehicle to use their oil from the factory, it has the Viper and SRT-6 on the flyer only.

So I guess the answer is to change to Mobil 1 10w30 after about 1,000 miles or so....

I don't much care about the EPA (or other government agency) mileage certification. The original book has 10/30 as the recommended weight, but there's an addendum to the book that says 5/30, so the comment above was spot-on.

This is what I have done with mine. I dumped the factory oil at 600 miles, I then ran Castrol GTX 10w30 until the 2500 mile mark. Upon the advice of Dave at Redline I didnt want to run synthetic until 2000-3000 mile mark. I then switched to Mobil 1 10w30. It seems to have worked well for me, the car dyno's well, the used oil analysis show very low wear numbers, and the engine does not consume any oil.

I've Been experimenting with Mobil 1 10w30/Redline 10w30 brew mix the last while. I also think Mobil 1 0w-40 might be a good visc. if doing some aggressive driving. I have run Redline 10w-40 on one OCI when I did some road course racing this summer for extra protection. I might try running Mobil 1 0w-40 on one OCI for comparison if I get a chance. But so far the Mobil 1/Redline 10w30 brew has worked very well. My used oil analysis are posted on this site, and I just posted a used oil analysis of Mobil 1 5w30 on an SRT-4 that belongs to a contact of mine.

I definitely recommend 10w30 over the 5w30 if you aren't driving in winter conditions.
