got a 98 civic with 211,000 miles and the srs light is flashing, is this something to be worried about, and is the car safe to drive ?

I'm gonna' guess this works like the CEL, if it's lit there's a problem if it flashes there's a BIG problem.

Safe to drive, probably. Just don't hit anything....

SRS = airbags.

Like opus said, just don't hit anything. If that light is flashing, something is really messed up with the airbags.

I would get the code read ASAP.

A run of the mill scanner will not detect Body codes as with a SRS light. You will need something like autoenginuity or a Genysis scan tool to read these codes. If you dont know anyone with a comprehensive scan tool, you are looking at taking it to a shop to be properly diagnosed. Good luck.

More than likely the car is telling you that the SRS system should be checked by a dealer to make sure it is operating properly after 11 years.

My friends 2000 Accord has the same issue...He took it to the Honda dealer in Coral Springs and they said it was a air bag issue...The dealer said they have to diagnose the problem and that could take hours and hundereds of dollars in labor...They said they just can't re-set it...My friend didn't like the sound of that...In the end the service advisor said if it was his own car he would not do anything about it [since the car is 10 years old] and just ride with the light on as no harm will be done...So my friend has deceided just to ride around with the light on.

Sounds a bit dubious to me. There are codes usually stored in most airbag systems that help to narrow down what the fault is.

Many times it is simply an open in the driver side inflator circuit caused by a worn out airbag coil/clockspring.

Like I said prior, take it to a trusted shop that can diagnose the SRS light with a tool and go from there. You shouldn't drive around with an srs light on.

I told him to go somewhere else to check it out...I found a trusted shop for him so hopefully he will take in there...Every dealer down here is Stealership with Toyota and Honda leading the way.

I would find a different dealer. You will want the airbag if you have an accident. Both my wife and oldest daughter have had accidents that totalled the vehicles they were driving and go out and walked away unharmed thanks to the SRS. Definitely worth the money IMO.

Hundreds of dollars cost is a crock. I had a BMW dealer diagnose and turn off the airbag light. The total cost was $57 and they checked the components to make sure that everything was OK.

One of the things I learned was that the airbag system stores the low voltage/dead battery instances.
