Got pulled over in Tucumcari, New Mexico (I-40) this morning around 6am for doing 84 in a 75, Officer said if I plead guilty it's a $25 fine. Caught me off guard as 1. I haven't been pulled over in 30+ years, And 2. Never heard of a officer making plea deals on the side of the road.

I plead guilty & paid the fine just now online.

Thought being pulled over on a empty highway in the middle of the desert for doing 9 over was a little extreme. But I didn't voice my opinion :)

Wow. Gotcha for less than 10 miles over. Poor New Mexico. They need the money so badly.

Excuse to run your plate for other possible hits is my guess.
You don't need to pull someone over to run the plates. They do it all the time, and lots of departments have license plate scanners....that and Flock camera's being everywhere now. Your plates are probably run at least once a day if you live in a moderately populated area whether you realize it or not.

Similar happened to me last year for first time in over 45 years. Doing about 46mph on a small county road with speed limit of 25mph in the middle of no place. Matter of fact a blacktop between two cattle pastures. LEO was super nice and instructed / encouraged me to take an online driver safety test. Then to email it in with $110 fine pymt to DA's office to have the ticket altered from moving to non moving violation that he said would not affect my auto insurance. I followed his instructions to the letter and all worked out as he said it would.

Kansas here....

1-10 MPH will not be reported to Insurance.
Fine $45 with $108 court costs. Fine/Court costs do not go go down depending if pleading.

An Officer doesn't have to pull you over to run your plate. They can run them at random as long as it's not for personal gain.
What’s fun is getting pulled over on the interstate for doing 72 in a 70, years ago when i70 was still 70. Trooper was not happy with me but ultimately gave me a warning. Lmao

Ask the Court if you could plea no contest, take an online driving class and it gets dismissed. If you are interested. Message me if you have questions. NMSP? Law enforcement prosecute petty misd in NM

Wow, that's bad.
I drive a LOT of cross country and live at 9 over. I also use a radar detector religiously and have had great success.
Yup, sounds like you were the victim of a fund raising campaign @clinebarger . 😞

You see more state troopers per mile in NM than just above any other western state. I kind of like that. (p.s. They always drive in the left lane.)

Happened to me just outside Browning MT on an early Sunday morning. I was driving a rental 2018 5.0 and if you breathed to heavily on the gas you'd gain speed. I'd JUST slowed down, again, because of this, but gained it right back and got zapped by a trooper doing 11 over. He knocked it to 10 over and said I could pay $20 or go to court the next day. I looked at him for a couple of seconds...then asked "$20??" "Yes." Me "OK!" Couldn't believe it! Nothing on my record or insurance. I now have a Uniden R7 as an early warning device since I have the same car to do road trips.

I went for a relaxed ride today. Stayed pretty close to the speed limit of 35...

Speeding is speeding. You went over their allowable limit and got busted.

As much as it pains me, I have to agree with you. Especially today with most all of the cars having cruise controls. Many even have radar braking if you creep up behind another vehicle.

You have to knowingly set the cruise above the posted limit. And that "posted limit" is usually displayed in the bottom right corner of your navigation display. Especially on the Interstate Highways.

So today there is all but zero reason to go even 5 MPH over the limit. It would be like putting the wrong heading into an auto pilot, then blaming the airplane for going to the wrong destination..... Or into a mountain.
