Speeding ticket

Happened to me just outside Browning MT on an early Sunday morning. I was driving a rental 2018 5.0 and if you breathed to heavily on the gas you'd gain speed. I'd JUST slowed down, again, because of this, but gained it right back and got zapped by a trooper doing 11 over. He knocked it to 10 over and said I could pay $20 or go to court the next day. I looked at him for a couple of seconds...then asked "$20??" "Yes." Me "OK!" Couldn't believe it! Nothing on my record or insurance. I now have a Uniden R7 as an early warning device since I have the same car to do road trips.
I lived in MT in the 80's and 90's, it was only $5.00 back then....inflation.

I'd be appalled being fined $25...in my state his citation would be $14 🤣
Ok another confession. When I moved to PA I had a hot date. She told me she just got her car inspected for $65. I said what? I pay $14 in New York State. I seriously considered moving back 😆

Pretty sure same violation in PA is well over $130. I got 52 in a 25 and it was $120. Justice reduced it to 5 over. This was about 16 years ago and I did learn my lesson. Although same road in Calif has a 55 mph speed limit. The lesson was to pay attention and abide by posted limits, the roadway is not always indicative of the maximum allowable speed.

But that's how it should be, if they allow you to do 75 or 80 that should be the speed limit. not speed limit + a random number over
If that's the case, then they better be pulling over EVERYONE driving above the posted speed limit and removing officer discretion. No exceptions. Good luck.

$25 and done with? I'd carry $50 at all times in the car then. I can't call it being "hassled", disobey the speed limit, pay the fine.

Is odd how many of us would "religiously" obey traffic lights and other signs--but a speed limit sign is is considered the min speed. Society is weird with its cultural rules. Anyhow, around here, speed limit is really the minimum speed you'd see on the highway, less and you probably should get a ticket for being an impediment (assuming that the roads aren't empty).

There is a street 2-3 mi from my house I travel almost daily. This particular street (one lane each side with divider) passes right along the side of a large golf course , the club house and their large parking lot. Just about every day there is Patrol vehicle sitting in there half hidden under the the trees giving out tickets. The street gets a lot of traffic and speeders as it leads to a main that ties into the interstate.

Out of habit , I automatically set cruise at 27mph and have never been stopped. Almost every time wife leaves to go past there , I tell her "watch your speed on that street , you know they are waiting with tickets."

Then , every time you can see that the Patrol car is NOT there , many cars are doing double the (25mph) limit and nearly run you over from behind. I have pulled to the shoulder to let a few wilder ones zoom by while thinking  "now where is that LEO when these are driving this fast thru a neighborhood where kids ride bikes or folks walk on the shoulder?" Cruise control comes in very handy for me because it is very easy if not paying close attention to end up speeding. I turn it on almost every time I drive anyplace.

Years ago I was pulled over for going 60 in a 55 zone. I told the officer I was only going 5 over. He replied, that’s speeding right? I didn’t say anything else. LEO’S are witnesses for the prosecution, you are a witness for the defense, and if you’re planning on going to court to fight the ticket, keep your mouth shut!

Punishable by fine means legal for a price 🤷🏻‍♂️

What’s fun is getting pulled over on the interstate for doing 72 in a 70, years ago when i70 was still 70. Trooper was not happy with me but ultimately gave me a warning. Lmao
I got stopped driving 1 mph below the speed limit once.
I was driving my Father and Grandfather to a funeral in his green, Ford Freestar wheelchair converted minivan on I-49 when I passed a deputy (facing against traffic) radaring at an overpass.
I had the cruise set at 70 and was below that due to the incline of the overpass when I nervously glanced at the speedometer to confirm. Within seconds a gray caravan blew past both of us in the left lane. In my mirror, I saw the cruiser brake lights come on as I lost sight of him.
Needless to say, he shagged me down like a hound on a rabbit. The caravan had sped up and disappeared.

Deputy-"License and registration"
Deputy-"Do you know how fast you were going?"
Me-"Yessir, 69 mph"
Deputy-"Try 80+mph"
Me-"Sir, That wasn't me, It was a gray van that passed me....."
Deputy-"yeah,....okay..."
My already irritated Dad yelling from the back seat-"It wasn't us!! He had the G/D cruise set on 70 and you lost sight of both of us while you turning around back there!!!"
Mostly blind and partially deaf Grandpa from the back-"WHO IS THAT???" "WHAT'S GOING ON???"
Me-"IT'S A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY GRANDPA!! WE'VE BEEN PULLED OVER!"
Grandpa-"WHAT THE HELL DOES HE WANT??"
Me-"HE'S ACCUSING ME OF SPEEDING"
My Dad- "HE WASN'T SPEEDING!!! We're gonna see you in court!!!" (pointing at the deputy and turning red)
Grandpa-AHH!!! BULLSCHIT!!!
Me- (blankly staring at the deputy like I wanted to die.....)
My Dad was still arguing his case when the Deputy quietly walked back to his unit without saying a word and drove off....

A dear uncle worked the Western States (sales) and told me, "Once you hit 80 mph, you're fair game".

My personal favorite is in Rockland Co., NY where 2 highways come real close together...think the sides of an hourglass.
There's a wee village in the pinch point. If one highway is clogged, people exit and jump onto the other.
This caused the town to post 8 MPH speed limits.

In my experience, State Troopers here in AL will not flinch at speed limit +10mph on the highway. Above that, well..

My last ticket was in 1995.

Wow. Gotcha for less than 10 miles over. Poor New Mexico. They need the money so badly.
Are you sure New Mexico got the money and not the cop?: $25 sounds pretty low for an instant fine.

I got through Tucumcari the end of September, both coming and going, without any problems. Could it be because I was not speeding?

Here in Mohave County, AZ the state police catch drug runners because the dummies just cannot resist speeding.

Reminds me of Little Feat. Now you just need to go to Tucson, Tahachapi and Tonopah. Also drive every kind of rig that’s ever been made

Whether the patrolman pocketed the amount is another discussion but the fine is legit. You want to shear rather than scalp the sheep.

What was the joke about Montana? back in the double nickel days. The minimum fine was $5 and you could pay the officer on the spot? So one could give the officer a twenty and say that it was for the next three stops too. Something like that

I don't think I got to drive there during the "reasonable and prudent" days (just as well, what with the jalopies I owned back then).

9 over on the open freeways is a big fat nothing around here; nobody cares. At least $25 doesn't break the bank.

Silicon Valley needs twice the CHP. Speeders are not a big deal but cutting you off is. It's bad.
