Specialty Oil Brand

Personally I wouldnt spend the money on a specialty oil as I wouldnt notice the difference and nor would my car. Maybe in a different application but even then the mainstream oils do such a good job it makes no difference. I suppose if you just want to run a niche product, I would go with redline or some other brand thats hard to find. Royal Purple sells at Canadian Tire and walmart and isnt all that niche or expensive (when on sale).

OP wants a fancy bottle his friends haven't heard of.

Go on amazon and sort by price, descending.

Donald's reply about the Amsoil was very helpful.

Thanks

I use Amsoil, and have since 2004. The Wrangler in signature had a head gasket at 168k miles and internally was spotless. Amsoil always since 20k, changed at up to 12k intervals.

Out of what I listed, it's a bit of a tossup. Eneos, of all things, is the cheapest of all three, and for whatever reason has a better regular price than the majors at Partsource or NAPA. So, if I needed a synthetic for my G37, and wasn't looking at extending drains the way Amsoil and RP can, I'd have to go Eneos.

As for the suggestion that you just might want a pretty bottle, well, if that's the case, get Eneos. It's cheaper per litre than other synthetics at regular price at Partsource or NAPA.

If I needed dexos1, I'd grab the Royal Purple. Amsoil is also similarly priced at Peavey Mart, so that would be a consideration. Note, as has already been pointed out, that RP does go on sale at Canadian Tire and Partsource on occasion, but just not by much. Personally, I like all three brands, and it's hard to pick favourites, unless I'm pressing the extended drain bit with Amsoil or even RP, or needing an actual dexos1 oil, which RP is.

I'm a huge fan of Kendall GT-1 full synthetic with liquid titanium. Been using it in a 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT and 2014 Hyundai Santa FE v-6 (both direct injected). Both engines love the 5w-30 flavor of this oil.

I get it from a small mom and pop repair shop near me for $36 a case (12 qts). Great stuff!

What engine do you want to put this magic elixir in? Do you have an unusual application or very harsh operating conditions?

In the US, we consider AMSoil, Redline, Joe Gibbs Driven, and Motul to be boutique, specialty brands. AMSoil has a lot of different oils formulated for special applications. Redline and Joe Gibbs are mostly for racing. Schaeffer's is borderline boutique, but is not as expensive. Royal Purple has passed out of being boutique, except for their formulations containing Synerlec.

that Napa Select (purportedly rebadged Val Synpowah?) oil with a NAPA silver (Gold if you want to go elite) filter!

Amtecol full synthetic 100% PAO based oil. Pretty good bang for the buck and never caused problems when was used for 7k OCI in a 1zz Toyota engine.

I am not sure this brand will get you anything over and above the top brands on the shelves, but Renewable Lubricants (RLI) formulations are made of Bio-Synthetics.

Over here the ester based Motul 300V is the exotic performance oil for those with deep pockets.

For us mortals with less deep pockets, we make do with Penrite 10-Tenths Racing. It's 100% group 4 & group 5, street legal, high zinc (1700 + ppm) and real specifications like API SN & ACEA A3/B3.

Also the Penrite 10-Tenths Premium

Get some of that under your hood.

Only if it's on special. Eneos is cheaper at NAPA Canada than NAPA synthetic if the latter isn't on sale.

I and my friends have tried a few exotics like Rock Oil, Motul, Agip, etc and they all worked fine. But no better than Mobil, Castrol, Valvoline or Shell (Pennzoil). The thing to look at is the specifications, to be a acceptable oil it needs to be API SN (or SL in some cases) then you move up from there. Dexos-1 is a step up, ACEA A5/B5 is a step up again. Then as things become more robust you have ACEA A3/B4 then the Euro car specs like BMW LL-01 and on to one of the best specs MB 229.5 or MB 229.51.

Once you start chasing these specifications as indications of quality, you realize it's hard to go past the big brands like Mobil, Castrol, SOPUS, Valvoline, etc. They are big for a reason and they produce some amazing oils.

However, if money is no object, and you only need API SN, you have lots of rare options open to you. Just check the oil meets the spec you need. Some of the exotics are going for more of a racing market, so they carry few real specs or out of date specs.
