Specialty Oil Brand

Hello All,

I am looking for your opinions and recommendations for a good specialty type oil brand that is not considered one of the big oil brands (Castrol, Mobil, QS, Shell etc) that you would get at a big box store. I know this is very vague but I am looking for something along the lines of a Royal Purple type somewhat niche brand that would be used and recommended by the DIY auto enthusiast community. I have been looking at brands such as Motul, Amsoil and Redline as potential brands. I am not looking at a specific grade but more at the brand. I live in Canada and would appreciate your feedback.

Even those oils you named are very good products, overall performance are no better than the quality synthetic you named.

Sorry for not being more clear, I absolutely do not find those brands "unacceptable" they are all great oil brands. I am just looking for your opinions on lesser known more niche type brands that you use or would recommend. I hope that helps,

For what purpose, the name brands make very good oil at less cost that the boutique stuff. I suppose you want to pay more for less.

For 99.9% of us, the high quality motor oils at Walmart will do as good a job as would Amsoil. No need to order Amsoil motor oil.

Now for break-in or a classic car, Amsoil has some specialty oils worth looking at. Amsoil also has excellent ATF and gear oils probably better than what you find at Walmart as there is not a great selection of those type of products at Walmart.

Essentially I am looking for feedback about the lesser known, higher end niche oil brands that exist and your experiences with them, why/if you would choose them over a regular store brand.

If I wasn't concerned about money and wanted to use an expensive oil, I'd have Motul, Royal Purple HPS, and Red Line oils on my garage shelves.

Petronas Syntium, Total Quartz synthetic, Eneos full synthetic - there's 3 that are hard to find. I'm sure they're fine, just like the stuff in the Walmart isle.

Why, what would that get you? And how would you know that you get what you think you get?

That's the point, and relates directly to the question being asked. What would Royal Purple, or Motul or Red Line get me over, let's say Mobil 1 0W-40 from Walmart? And how would I know I got anything better? How do I know it isn't just mystique or exclusiveness that I get for more money with those brands?

Look into Schaeffer's Oil. They use antimony in their formulation supposedly.

Not necessarily recommended by car enthusiasts but, certainly not common in big box stores.

In Canada, Royal Purple is one of the few specialty brands you're going to find at a big box or chain store. Amsoil will occasionally be found at places like Peavey Mart. You may find Motul lurking around at a couple places, especially power sport shops. Also, you will find Eneos at Napa Canada and occasionally at Partsource, thought that's not exactly a specialty oil, nor is it priced obscenely, which is the norm for specialty oils in Canada.

What brand would you go with if it were readily available in a Peavey Mart, Napa or a Partsource? Assuming it were slightly more expensive than the regular store brands...
