Should spark plugs be covered in a new vehicle bumper to bumper warranty? You're not going to warranty filters etc in a 3/36 warranty but are spark plugs different in your opinion?

I'd consider them a wear item.

--Edit--

Although, thinking about it, if one failed out of the blue, I would expect them to cover the labor, but perhaps not the part.

You'd think a dealer would just eat something so simple especially if you bought and maintained the car with them. Big grey area.

Its a good question. I would have to assume under the 36K warranty would be long before the spark plug change interval - so I would think if it caused a misfire they would cover it? But OEM's and dealers will do anything to get out of a warranty claim.

My Xterra in warranty had the drive belt squeaking at like 30K. The dealer fired the parts canon and changed the idler pulley and the belt together. Cured the problem but they charged me for the belt because they said it was a "wear item". I was a bit miffed but it was like $30 so I didn't complain. No labor - that was warranty, I guess for the idler?

Same here.....only a bad dealer would make you pay for spark plugs if they died a few months in or at low mileage.... but again filters etc...

But wouldn't the entire parts in an engine be consumables too..... but they would be covered unless bad maintenance or racing etc...
So many variables.

I would have gave you the belt...
Especially if you were a repeat customer. $30 is enough for some to go elsewhere

At that time where i lived I think the next closest Nissan dealer was an hour away. So maybe that was part of it.

Of course where I live now there are 3, but there all owned by the same people anyway so....

I had a 82 Datsun Diesel with a then 12/12k warranty and a glow plug went belly up in the warranty period and I had to pay for it....

They should be warranted for the spark plug interval. Some of them only say to replace them every 100k or more, so if they fail at 30k, they should absolutely be covered.

Interestingly, spark plugs are specifically covered under the 2 year emissions warranty on my Toyota. The 8 year stuff is listed 8/80. So I presume its 24K on plugs?

VW list them in their 40k mile service.... but apparently don't warranty them at all

When a coil or fuel injector has failed and caused a misfire, Ford has us do the spark plug on that cylinder. I don't think we have ever seen a whole set of plugs go bad

I can't understand where this misconception comes from and why it's so pervasive...

Warranty work for a dealer is extra business. No one runs away from extra business.

They don't do it for free. They get paid for it. By the manufacturer.

As for the manufacturer - could be there was a time when they would have preferred to do nothing, but wit the price of PR noway makes any penny pinching a ticking time bomb.

They will be reluctant to play the warranty for anything that is not clear cut, that's for sure. But once it's approved it's just work like any oter.

I once had a misfire on the 94 Grand Am GT that I bought new and the dealer replaced ONE spark plug under warranty. Seems odd that they wouldn’t just do all of them but then again it did fix the problem and at the time it only had about 20k on it.

I got a story to tell about the 2 days I wasted at VW. Nobody would believe it.

I really don't like replacing one of anything....I guess spark plugs are now $6k each....geez
