Southern Cali drivers....nightmare!

Just got back from a trip from Seattle to Phoenix. Ignorantly (and not taking advice from others) I decided to go past the LA area on my way south. MISTAKE! I went south on I-5 through Santa Clarita and then onto I-210 from Glendale through San Bernardino...connecting eventually to I-10 east to Phoenix. It was very early morning (sun was barely up). I figured I was far enough away from the city of LA that it would be fine. BOY was I wrong! And it wasn't just the amount of traffic....it was the honestly INSANE way people drive there that drove me crazy. No signals....no speed limit AT ALL....very rude....they cut each other off....they merge at at least fifteen MPH OVER the speed limit and swerve RIGHT in front of you if you give them an inch of space....and they do all this with ZERO regard to the mortality of the human body. I've been all over this country and driven in many, many states......but I am totally CERTAIN that LA drivers are the most dangerous I've ever seen.....and the most rude as well. They seem to celebrate an attitude of invincibility and arrogance that makes New York or Chicago drivers seem saint-like. Even the cops don't signal or drive safely.
It's weird because from about Sacramento south.....it get's worse and worse the closer you get to LA.
Call me 'gramps' if you will (under 50 however), but in the future I will avoid that area by at least a 100 mile radius.
Ok....done ranting.

Never been to Cali, but my moms cousin came here from LA to VA and was immediately in love with ..... the traffic or lack thereof. I work in DC during the work week and while the traffic is absolutely TERRIBLE the vast majority of drivers are very good at merging and don't cut you off. Now if only I could get more than 10 miles in an hour on I-95 during rush hour.

Yep... I know what you mean! Drove out from Phoenix a few months back to visit a friend in LA. OMG! Insane... I couldn't believe the lack of consideration for people...

Were just better at avoiding accidents that you are.

Southern California, especially LA area, drivers are very aggressive. Everyone on highway is late to somewhere, nobody drives at speed limit when traffic is light or bumper to bumper. Bumper to bumper traffic is from around 3-4 AM till 10-11 PM

I've driven all over the LA area too many times to count. I always breath a sigh of relief when I make it back to the rental car turn-in at the airport. Chicago area traffic is tame compared to LA.

I've driven in downtown LA before, and I can attest.
One time I "accidentally" held up some traffic at an intersection because I didn't exactly know where I was going. I made a lane change last minute and was stopped diagonally at a light. Half of my rear bumper was in the other lane and I got some dirty looks.
This is something that would have been shrugged off in Georgia.

lol I went back to ATL where I grew up and thought it was crazy; but then I remembered the party VACAY I took in LA area and said close but no cigar...

That is exactly how people drive in Miami-Fort Lauderdale every single day of the week on I-95,826,836,874,395,195,Fla Turnpike and other roads down here.

The trip through that region was really a wake-up for me. Ordinarily I can handle most any traffic...even though I do get stressed at times. But LA traffic is something that must be driven to believe. It's the way they truly have no regard for their own life....let alone the lives of others. Very self centered in a way. It's as though the vehicle is an almost physical reflection of themselves....or at least how they want to be perceived (the whole 'attitude' thing I guess....makes no sense to me why having an attitude is a commendable thing).
Not trying to be overly critical of LA....but as a side note I didn't find the areas I drove through to be particularly attractive as portrayed in media. I also noticed the interstates in California seem to allow pedestrians (many homeless....I call them bums) to wander along on the shoulder with shopping carts and such! Strange place.
(I think I posted this thread topic in the wrong forum location....can somebody move it to the proper place? Thanks.)

Wow, I've also driven in a lot of the states, and in quite a few places overseas, and found the opposite. If you stay away from San Bernadino (it's a bad exception), most of the Southern Cal drivers seem ok. Yeah, they drive fast, but safely. On the other hand, when you see a car that going way too slow for the flow of traffic, and it's obvious the driver has no clue, they usually have a Washington license plate. They also seem have no knowledge on how to accelerate on an on-ramp to be going at or slightly faster than the traffic in the right lane in order to easily flow into the traffic.

Now, Vegas is another matter. Some of the most clueless drivers I've ever seen are here. Right turns on red without slowing down, lane changes into other cars during left turns (multiple turn lanes) and the attitude that the problem is because another driver has the audacity to be on the road at the same time...

The strange thing is, I could have said the same exact thing about drivers in your Seattle area. I spent 4 months there on a temporary IT project, and I found the drivers to often be angry, and road rage was all around me all the time. In Los Angeles, people drive aggressively, but sanely and they most often use signals, and they are safe, even as they are aggressive.

We’re now in Nashville, and what we see here is that these people do not know how to merge onto or off a freeway. They constantly drive on the zebra stripes painted between on and off ramps. They almost never signal either.
And it seems most drivers tailgate here too....horroring at 70+ MPH...

I've lived here for 15 years, and I totally agree with you. I've never been to a place like this with respect to merging. People in the flow of traffic actually hit their brakes to slow down to "let people in", and those "merging" don't actually merge--they just drift from the on-ramp into traffic.

It's pretty ridiculous. It's almost like it's a case of people being overly polite, and inhibiting traffic flow as a result.

The places that have the very best drivers in the whole world:

1. California
2. Germany

Everyplace else is filled with drivers that have no clue.

I wish I would have had my girlfriend record a vid of the lack of signals (cops included) and reckless driving. Seriously, I enjoy driving and looked forward to the experience of LA driving. I don't know if you are just trying to paint a more positive picture of the freeway driving in LA.....or you just have a different impression. I have no motive to put down the area....but just gave an honest description of EXACTLY what I went through. I can't understand AT ALL how you can say they use signals when at least from what I saw 90% did not (I actually counted....yes, I am anal at times).
You are correct that Seattle drivers are angry and full of rage. No argument there. And yes....many merge like fools. But for you to say that it is 'sane' with drivers going through LA traffic at 80 plus mph (very common....many much faster) is beyond me. The word 'safe' is another term I find misplaced in that area. Motorcycles weaving down the dotted lines.....merging at 80 plus with no signals and crossing up to four lanes in a single move...tailgating ANYBODY in the left two lanes REGARDLESS how fast you are going....and pedestrians walking along the shoulder.....ah...no sir, that stuff is not safe at all. Seattle drivers are poor indeed.....but at least when I arrive at my destination I don't feel like I was in the movie "Death Race".
I guess my main question is this....why don't you people down there just obey the traffic laws if you claim to be 'safe'? Laws mean NOTHING down there (at least on the freeway....including the CHP).

Going faster than 80 is not only unsafe but it's also a great way to waste gas which is why I can't justify doing it, at least not for more than a minute or so. Some folks just don't care about public safety or fuel economy.

The lack of turn signal use in California is widespread. People cannot be bothered. Showing courtesy to others might be construed as not being nearly important enough, or perhaps it is just the narcissism that is proudly cultivated here like nowhere else.

What I find most appalling is how people drive when it rains here. They speed up and tailgate and generally act like they have to get where they are going even faster lest they get stuck in a traffic jam due to an accident.

All while holding their phone to their face as if they are eating a Pop tart, after all it is illegal to drive without a hands free device.
