I picked up a good deal on a case of Formula Shell 5w30 SN rated conventional. Oil cap on both cars (Kia & Hyundai) states 5w20 but OM says 5w30 is acceptable . I could either run the Formula Shell by itself OR I could mix with a stash of Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 5w20 I have on hand . Both are SOPUS products (if thast means anything in a potential mix). Which would you choose ? Conditions are short to moderate suburban driving with some high way - both vehicles are still under warranty .

Ok, I have a pretty substantial stash (just over 500 qts now) and run into the "to blend or not to blend" dilemma every now and then as well. I've decided that for my personal cars, I will not second guess tribologists with millions (maybe billions) of dollars in research invested in formulating the oils they market. I usually go with top-level synthetics from major manufacturers.
If I don't have enough of a certain oil on hand, I will simply pick something else for that OC. Now when it comes to changing oil for free-loading buddies or just helping someone out, they very well may get a blend of my leftovers. I try to keep it within the same grade, but that doesn't always work out either. I figure if they cared that much, they oughtta buy their own dadgum oil!

I was originally thinking of running the FS 5W30 and Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 50 - 50 mix in the Summer . The prevailing thought here is FS 5W30 would be just fine as a Summer time oil for both cars . Never ran FS before , just trusting it is in the ball park (quality wise) with Pennzoil Conventional and Quaker State Conventional .

Yes, FS is in the same ballpark with Pennzoil Conventional and Quaker State Conventional. At least IMHO!
I have used all 3 and have read the used oil analysis on all 3. All used oil analysis look very good with a variety of driving styles and various thousand miles on the UOA. Surprising used oil analysis in fact since Pennzoil Conventional is always held in a bit higher regard here at Bob's, FS is no slouch.
I agree with other here whom have suggusted that you use the FS 5W30 in the summer time and Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 in the winter(although your mixing 50/50 wouldn't hurt). Using 5W20 during the winter in GA may now be more justified since it has now gotten colder, with lower tempuratures and some snow this past winter in GA. And this may not be the end as the climate has been changing everywhere.

Though it would not hurt, I would not mix them as you really gain nothing by doing so. As stated, use the FS in the summer and the PP in the winter.

Really? I thought Pennzoil conventional used a Group II+ and III mix while FS and QS were II+.
Not that it really matters, my engine has sounded and performed about the same on all 3 oils for 5k OCIs.
I switched from Pennzoil conventional to FS for the extra Moly in the previous SM era but it looks like Pennzoil conventional added it back in, so it will likely be the next OCI once I use up my FS.

As for as I know, Pennzoil conventional has never had Group III in it. It has always been Group II+, even before Shell bought Pennzoil. Up until about a year ago, both QS and FS were using Group II.
I vote for that tasty blend.
Thanks Johnny & others for the replies ... I know there are no cold start worries with FS when lows are in the 60's - but would mixing with PP for higher temp protection buy me anything extra over FS alone when GA. temps are already hitting 90's ? I will add both vehicles have new coolant and radiators are in tip top shape .

FWIW I mix Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 and Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 50% in my 05 Accord. In my mind, it makes it a syn blend, with more syn than the syn blend oils you can buy

There is no question just about any SN rated conventional oil can go 4~5K as an OCI and protect the engine . SN rated oils are better at cleaning too accept in the area of varnish - this is where a synthetic is better. Although varnish is said to not hurt anything , a 50/50 mix solves that concern before it gets started .
