Over on another forum someone asked about using synthetic oil in their vehicle. I responded and mentioned the idea of extending your OCI. I thought you might enjoy the exchange I had with one other forum patron here (my user name is "Clark"). It's absolutely amazing how set in there ways some people can become...oh well!

I did not read the whole thing but I am sorry Clark but 10k or more is too much...I know there are many that do this, but the avg soccer mom doesn't check her oil enough (if at all) and running that long you run the risk of running low on oil at the very least.

I DO see your point and for a person like yourself then it is fine, but for the avg person, 3-5k on dino & 5-7500k on synthetic is probably a safer recommendation in my humble opinion

Here's an idea (also for your friend that forgets to check the oil level): keep going to Jiffy Lube every 3K miles, but don't ask them to change the oil. Instead, just ask them to check your oil level and top off if necessary.

The average soccer mom doesn't care about synthetics or extended OCI's. They go to Jiffy Lube or the dealer and have a mileage reminder sticker placed on their windshield.

For someone who cares or is responsible enough a 10K OCI is fine.

Man you guys are vicious...I said I agree with him, and another post confirms that 10k is fine for BITOG people...that was my point. If the person on the other forum he is debating is anything like my "friend" who won't check the oil level, then it is a pointless debate.

I myself would not go 10k but with proper top-off, full synthetic oil & a good filter I know it can be done. I myself have never owned a car that did not use oil either and I myself do not like to top-off. I do believe UOA proves that many oils can last 10k or more under the right conditions so I was not debating that.

I should have been more clear meaning that "10k or more is too much to recommend to an outsider"

I like where Calvin says that he has seen engines running Amsoil grenade. I have 100K KM (60K Miles) and mine has never run better.

Some people are crazy!

I say let people change their oil at 3K miles (5K KM) and let it be their ignorance tax!

Yeah but those with a newer car in good shape that do 3k mile OCI, are wasting our oil!

One thing to keep in mind....although we all like to knock the quick lube places, for many folks....this is the ONLY time the hood is lifted and things get looked at.
Many quick lube places check your other fluids, belts, and eyeball for other obvious problems.
Many dealerships have put Quick lube lanes in.

I have had problems at full service dealership service departments.....so there is good and bad.
However, there is a place for quick lube shops....and when well run, they are a very good thing.

10K miles is a long time for some folks......and if this is the only time that their vehicle gets eyeballed under the hood......it may be too long.
For others, it is just fine.

our meaning the world's oil supply...but it could become more granular...say people in Canada doing 3k changes are wasting your oil and people in USA doing the same are wasting oil too.

Our could mean the oil junkie's oil (such as the members of BITOG)...I remember when Castrol GTX was 89 cents per qt in the nineties.

This is true. In the last month I had a lady driving an SSEI Bonneville come in with the supercharger belt that was broken and jammed into the side of the engine. I asked her if she had felt power loss, she said she did but didnt think to look under the hood.

VW Rabbit comes in for its second oil change at 17,000km. Half of the 3/4 inch wide serpentine belt had sheared off and was sitting on the skid plate.

Sometimes we find tools we left underhood during it's last oil service months ago.

That's probably the best spin I can put on this one.

Clark, I think that you'd best heed Dilbert's advice:
"Never argue with an idiot; they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

my bud just changed the oil in his fj,17k on amsoil 0w30,amsoil filter.never used a drop in 1 year.motor is clean as a pin looking down the oil cap.
