Quietly walking away is the right thing to do. But sometimes I can't help racking it up a notch and sending it straight back to them.

"Yeah that stuff is OK, but it has been out for awhile. The really new stuff is that bright blue e-oil that is electrically conductive and interfaces with the car's OLM. The car monitors engine and oil conditions, then changes the voltage applied to the oil to optimize the viscosity for the conditions and engine age. When you reverse the car it applies an inverted polarity on the oil as a cleaning cycle. You can see the OLM counting the other way when the car is reversing. Do you have any of the new e-oil?"

Whenever I get sucked into a conversation that involves assclownery,I always agree with them and watch them get all excited, and I keep adding to it to keep it going just to see what level they're going to take it to. Purely for my entertainment haha

Years back I was dating this one chick, and she'd called me one night before I had to go to sleep. She asked what I had planned for tomorrow, and I said "Well I need to change the oil in my car" and she suddenly says "Oil is supposed to be changed??" Needless to say that relationship didn't work out haha

I know it's not the perfect scenario but I picked up the last 3 qts of Havoline on clearance and the 1 qt of PUP was left over from a different oci.

Yup, better go out and check my truck also. I am using recycled dino oil and syn at a 50/50 mix (well, it was a 50/50 mix till I added more used syn to it).

I haven't heard too many stupid things from co workers.

The only thing I can think of is a coworker this week just replaced his 5-ish year old Ford Fusion with a Corolla because "the Fusion isn't a very good car to be putting a lot of miles on, a Corolla will last much longer." I don't think the Fusion has been troublesome for him either...

To an extent I might agree, but I see no reason why a Fusion can't do 20k+ miles a year.

I was at a parts store once and this guy brought 5 quarts of 5w30 Havoline Synthetic to the counter (was the oil change special) and the cashier asked how many miles were on his vehicle. The guy said 80k miles and the cashier went and got 10w30 instead of 5w30 because "it's a little thicker" since he had "high miles".

Buddy of mine thinks he will burnout his 2000 camry motor if he puts in 0w 30 instead of 5w30 and loves Mobil 1!!. I have told him dozens of times it wont do a [censored] thing and might actually be better and it even says on the Mobil 1 AFE bottles that the oil is specd for motors requiring 5w30!!! Then he claims that Pennzoil syn is also the other best oil but has never used it!

He also thinks that 0w is to thin for my motor and I have been putting all the 5ws and 0ws in there all the time and it has 202k on it with no work done!

I'd ask him if they were the same, why aren't they labelled the same, even within the same brand tiering?

When I had all these quarts of oil in the garage this girl thought that an oil change for a car consisted of ONE quart per change. At the time I had 30 quarts.

He explained that you cant mix conventional and synthetic because the synthetic oil will just float on top of the conventional and wont mix together. Like oil and water he explained so I could have a better visual picture I guess.

Glycol based synthetic oil does that (though on the bottom, IIRC) and has been used in engines...

I don't think they're available anymore, and you sure won't pick them up by accident in Walmart.

***UPDATE***

this "co worker" that doesn't know squat about cars brought the car to me. It had a HONDA filter and says 0w20 blend in. I put some Pennzoil "GOLD" 0w20 blend and a tough guard in and on

Did my good deed for the month

Oil. Then he said he looks at Wal mart and couldn't find any 0w20. I said, "we'll go to the automotive section and look!"

Why didn't you explain the difference? It would have taken less than 30 seconds. Not everyone is an oil guru.

Could have been a good opportunity to begin to expose him to our great DIY automotive maintenance hobby, and BITOG. this forum has helped me with some things that I now think are pretty basic stuff, and continues to do so. when you don't know though, it seems difficult. He is off to a good start with his choice of car.
