Sorry, but I was describing what I observe up here, around ME.

I do not know what it is like around your area,or the rest of this country.

dailydriver,

I'm 53 and was thinking we grew up in an era that very few people bragged and self promoted unless they could back it up. You would get immediately called out.

Today you have so many young egomaniacs putting themselves on an imaginary pedestal via Twitter and Facebook proclaiming their self importance for the world to see. Today's younger generations just don't know how difficult it is in the real world. They are mesmerized what they watch on TV and the internet and want to replicate that silly behavior. How sad.

I am sure it's a mixture of both in the whole country - the type you described, AND the type of people that I associate with on FB.
and i don't think one can observe this by a certain geographic area - I bet any state/area will have BOTH types at the same time. One can only observe which type one associates with. It depends on the person and his/her FB contacts, not where they live
(Our "decent"/logical/non-crazy FB friends/contacs that I described are scattered all over the country - and the world)

These are the kinds of friends we have too - but they're also on FB

Exactly. Im in a younger age group than ol' Pop, so there still are a few girls from HS that take pictures in tight dresses at bars in NYC with their butt sticking out. I cant complain.

If someone babbles stupidly, I ignore them. Not many do, as one is not obliged to "friend" everyone they have ever seen.

Some friends may be halfway across country. Its nice for them to send updates without filling an inbox with 50MB of pictures.

I dont text, but I do use facebook, and it appears that like hatred for Apple or anything else that has only existed from the 80's, 90's, or 00's onward, there is a lot of fear and anger likely because people are scared or cannot make heads or tails.

Really anyone belittling this stuff shouldnt be on an internet forum, because these, like usenet and similar exchange media are all new-fangled. After all, the local folks could all meet up at a club and talk this or that... why discuss on here? Web forums are a form of social media like anything else. Though apparently less threatening.

And believe it or not, friendships are made, rekindled, etc. on here like on facebook like in person.

Seems like there is a lot of black very little white and just a couple shades of grey in the middle about this whole social media topic.

My interest in possibly getting a FB account is to somewhat mitigate my growing desire to not interact with the rest of humanity on a personal level. I find subjecting myself in person to my fellow human these days to be stressful, yet I think this is a slippery slope with no good results and no chance of happiness at the bottom.

I've been seeing those who are obsessed with FB as a root of the evil which makes me dislike modern culture so much, mainly the "Look at ME!" behavior which has infected so much of the populace as of late.

It seems as though everybody is so obsessed now with accumulating more that nobody really has time to sit around for a conversation, or type a cogent reply to an e-mail. So short texts, and apparently comments on FB are the modern way of keeping in touch without affecting one's schedule.

My main interest in considering joining FB is to not further alienate myself from the relatively close knit of friends who I shared my formative years with. Perhaps it is too late. It appears they are all keeping in regular touch through FB, and know what is going on with each other, and have all told me to sign up, but I sit on the outside rattling my antisocial saber and hating humanity.

Facebook got my current high paying job. I connected with a former colleague. I posted not getting renewed at my 6 year contract. She remembered and 5 months latter asked for my resume and promised an interview. 3 years latter I am one of three key leads at company.

Social networking professional and personal via google search is what prospective employers look at.

I was pretty late in the game when it came to Facebook (~2 years ago). I still don't completely understand what Twitter is and only use LinkedIn for work-related stuff.

It's a handy way to keep in touch with old Army buddies, friends, and family. It really doesn't replace the phone, email, or letters but supplements it -- I like seeing what people are up to, as well as their spouses, and kids. It's also a good way of sharing photos, without the redundancy of giant email attachments to multiple people. I'm also not much of a phone person.

In a lot of ways, it's not much different than BITOG, except I actually know the people.

I personally have NOTHING against technology per se, it is just the obsessive, self-absorbed, addicted nature of some of the users who act like the proverbial '12 year old girls', and just CANNOT be away from their 'social medias' for more than a minute or 2 (IF that!).

If one is sane about it, I do not see ANY problem with it, even if it is not for me.

As far as Apple goes, I think that their actual products are GREAT, it is just the cult atmosphere, and "required" status/uppityness surrounding them that puts me off.
