Quaker State and Pennzoil? Same company, same bottles, difference prices. But, what, if any, differences exist in the oils? I was at Walmart last night and saw the 5 quart jugs of Quaker State Peak performance for $9.27, which makes it the cheapest 5 quart jug of oil you can get at Walmart. The Pennzoil is down from $13.50 to $12.00, but is it really worth the extra $2.73 to get the Pennzoil?

Spend as little money as you can. It all comes from the same barrel, all are treated with the same additives. Also, spend as little as you can on your oil filter, too.

QS and Pennzoil are great oils, but if you look around right now, you can buy Formula Shell (which fits all of the comments you made about QS in your post) for .49 a quart. I use FS when Pennzoil isn't on sale and no complaints.

I know I didn't answer your question exactly, but just my .02

I do like to spend as little as I can, while getting a quality product. I know Pennzoil is good stuff, but if Quaker State is the exact same product in a different bottle with a lower price tag, that's what I'm going to buy.

I don't like to go so cheap that I end up buying junk.

You might want to check with Johnny about that since he says the oils are very different and have different design teams.

FWIW, the YB is supposed to have GrpII+.

QS is not junk. Is it worth buying Pennzoil for 2.73 more? Yes, in my opinion, as I am a big yellow bottle Pennzoil fan. That being said, any SM oil I can find for under fifty cents a quart is going to be in my car as I alluded to in earlier post with the Formula Shell stuff.

Bill in Utah has had excellent UOA's with Pennzoil. Check them out.

I thought Johnny posted awhile back that he cannot comment directly on SOPUS products because of a new consulting position or something that precludes him from doing so.

I think a thread with info like that about many of the commonly available oils might be nice. I don't suppose such a thread already exists?

Yes, and apparently the OP does...

He is no longer doing that to the best of my knowledge.

blah blah blah

I am no longer doing that is correct.

Base stocks: Pennzoil YB = Group II+ - Quaker State = Group II
Additive pkg: Pennzoil YB = Afton - Quaker State = Lubrizoil

That's it, except for $2.73 I would use the Pennzoil.

Sounds like Quaker State would be a good budget oil for a car that gets its oil changed every 3,000 miles (like my dads car, I simply can't shake him of that habit).

For my personal stuff, Pennzoil it is.

Thanks for the help guys, and especially you Johnny.

Bummer. I really liked an oil change that cost me under six bucks with filter.

Do it like I do.

Don't ever discard your used oil.

I recycle mine. I pour it through fifteen layers of cheesecloth into a 55-gal drum with a tap on the bottom for easy draw for the next oil change.

I let my filters drain for two weeks, and then I store them in ziplock baggies waiting for the next use.

I save tons of cash this way.
