Snow hell in SoCal

I got so many calls for snow chains today. We as a company will not touch them due to someone borrowing a set form our old GM, not putting them on right, damaging their car, and suing the company. We refuse to stock, sell, order, or install them.

It rained all night. This is a new record for my place. Previous record was 1.75 inches over a 24 hr period

Ya we don't do snow well.

Because driving in snow requires control - and 4X4 makes things worse.

Control comes from good tires, with sipes and appropriate rubber for cold surfaces, as well as experienced drivers understanding the limits of traction.

4X4 often forces a loss of stability by locking hubs, or transfer case, and forcing a wheel to slip on the road because they can't rotate at different speeds. I would never select 4 hi on my old 4 Runner when I lived in Vermont, because it reduced the car's stability. So, yeah, good for getting unstuck, but, and this is key, bad for avoiding a loss of control.

When you have a population that thinks 4X4 is good for snow, and lots of tires with a summer bias, well, lots crashes are the result.

Those of us who grew up with snow, lived with snow, realize that it's control that helps. Control from appropriate tires and appropriate driving.

See it all the time, most Cali drivers have no clue how to drive in wet/snowy weather, CHP preaches to high heaven to slow down but it falls on deaf ears, truckers are the worst.

They are predicting 3-4 FEET of snow in the big bear area behind us. This amount is almost unheard of here. We had a lot of snow coming down a couple of hours ago. So much that visibility was very limited. Then the clouds went away,it warmed up to 46 and it's all gone now.
Reminded me of around 1976-1977 I lived in Anaheim CA; Guy had a jeep always said it would go anywhere. Him and another fellow went to Big Bear horsing around 4 wheeling in the snow and must have gotten stuck. Sadley, they never found them till it was too late.

omg, thats not even much snow😂... why no winter tires?
They don't sell winter tires here. We never needed them. Guess a guy could order them?Currant pics of my place in the desert.

Different parts of the country sell stuff you cant get somewhere else. Example: I can walk into any auto parts store and buy straight 30 or 40 oil. But snow chains have to be special ordered as there just is not any need for them here normally.

That really depends on what car you have or what kind of 4x4. For example its total madness to drive with a Hilux with rwd on in winter. With 4x4 and diff lock is much better.

My perspective on AWD/4WD is that it gives you better stability in snow if you travel at a prudent speed. It also helps when you have to make evasive maneuvers to avoid other vehicles that are out of control.

It’s a good tool if properly used along with driving skill and good tires. If any of those are missing then good luck.
