Yes, I admit it - I smoke. I smoke 2 or 3 bowls a day - lasting 30-45 minutes each. Like many others, i'm hooked also.

Any pipe smokers here?

I've never personally liked the taste or smell of cigarettes. However, I do enjoy a nice cigar - especially after a good meal. My real smoking enjoyment is the pipe. My personal favorite is my Savinelli bent-bulldog.

Normally I prefer the MacBaren blends, with an occasional bowl of Dunhill 965 - when i'm in the mood for a mild English Blend.

When i'm low on custom blends, haven't been to the tobacco store in a while, or just want a change, I revert back to my earlier smoking preferences - Captain Black (White), or Captain Black Royal (Blue).

Any other Pipe Smokers here on BITOG?

If so, what's your preference of tobaccos? Pipe brands & styles?


Please - absolutely no mention of illegal smoking substances here - not the intention of this thread and definately against the rules! The subject and intro to my post merely was an attempt at humor ONLY!

Been a pipe smoker since 1966. I have a small collection of pipes, all Ashton X or XX in size. Call me old fashioned/cheap, but I smoke plain old Prince Albert. I go through one of their 14 oz containers a month.

When I'm working outdoors, I smoke one of my corn cob pipes, just in case I drop it. No since in ruining a good pipe.

Hello Johnny - absolutely nothing wrong with Prince Albert or Corncob Pipes. I have a couple of Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cobs myself - great pocket pipes for taking out and about.

I never really cared for Prince Albert that much, but I know many here locally that smoke it exclusively. I've only been a pipe smoker since '93, but I was born in '73.
 
My Dad smoked Sir Walter and my Granddad smoked the Prince. I tried Sir Walter first but could not handle it. I've tried a few different custom blends over the years but none agreed with me. So, about twenty years ago I said to heck with it and just stayed with the Prince.

I should add that I also have a few small Dunhill's in my small collection that I purchased back in the late 60's, early 70's.

It's a free country and that is your right. It can be a nasty habit, but it's better than cigs or chewing tobacco.

My Granddad died at 92. Not from smoking his pipe but from drinking his bourbon. Destroyed his liver.

I know, not drinking and living in WI just does not go together. There seems to be a bar on every street corner. I think I read somewhere that there is more brandy consumed in WI than anywhere else in the world.
 
Johnny, my dad is a retired Tow-Boat captain. He has smoked a pipe for as long as I can remember - and he used to smoke Captain Black (White) exclusively. I (and many others) always loved the smell - which is, I guess, what drew me to that particular blend. Over the years, i've tried about every OTC Blend. Some of them are very good, and some not so good. I don't mind Borkum Riff on occasion, but their blends tend to have a little more bite than I prefer.

Is the Middleton's (or similar manufacturer, I forgot) Apple Blend still available? I haven't seen it here locally in several years.

All of my uncles and aunt were pretty spread out, but we all came together twice/year to visit at my grand parents. The smell of the Half and Half my grampa smoked is probably one of the best smells I can remember. It smells good on it's own, but for me it smells like family.

That smell and Barbasol still remind me of him. He died of Asbestosis after working with asbestos as a factory worker earlier in his life.

Thirty years ago I met a man named Dave Boyle who had half of his tongue and jaw removed because of mouth cancer from smoking a pipe for 20 years. I immediately quit smoking cold turkey and have never missed it.

Dave is still alive today and gives talks ( as best he can of course ) at local middle schools about the downside of smoking or chewing tobacco. I'm sure he's discouraged hundreds of kids from ever starting that nasty habit.

All comments are welcome (within the rules).

The only problem I have with that is - for every example I see reguarding the harm and dangers related to pipe smoking (which is safer than cigars & cigarettes), there are other examples like the one Johnny gave - where smoking wasn't a problem or a cause of health problems. I've personally seen this in my extended family.

Chewing tobacco, OTOH, is definately out with me - tried it once and puked - no thanks...

I chomp on a cigar once in a while, but I don't really smoke; I can't stand the ashtray aftertaste. I do, however, enjoy the smell of high quality secondhand smoke.

My professor once said he used to smoke a pipe once in a while, and he likes mild cigars. I thought when I get my degree, I might get him a few good cigars, a corncob, and some tobacco for it... but I don't have a clue what tobacco I should get for him. Any suggestions?

(I don't mean to hijack the thread, but this seemed like such a good place to ask.)

That's a hard one. There are so many brands/flavors/varieties out there - it's occasionally a hard choice for even long-time smokers.

My best advice there would be to casually talk to him about pipes and cigars - see if you can (subtly) find out what kind of pipe tobacco he used to smoke. That should at least point you in the right direction.

Of the readily available blends, I would recommend Captain Black White (of course)

or Prince Albert. Others might be Half & Half, Carter Hill, or even Sir Walter Reighly - as a last resort.

The best bet is still seeing if you can find out his preferences and go from there.

I've smoked a pipe for a little over two years. I quit smoking cigarettes and wanted something to puff on in the evenings, sometimes when I'm out in the garage. I have three pipes that I rotate through and I smoke White Captain Black and Prince Albert mixed 50/50. The Captain was a little to aromatic and hot-burning, and the Prince had good flavor, but needed something to give it a little more body. When I'm out and about and see a good pipe tobacconist I may get an ounce of something special to keep to the side, but generally I stick with my blend. It's really well balanced stuff, IMO.
