Pipe Smoking

I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex and rich food. He was healthy right up to the time he killed himself..... Johnny Carson

I understand what you are saying. Some things people are better off just not doing. Me, I have a huge collection of pipe tobacco, probabally about 30 different types in 2 or 4 ounce packages. I also have about 10 different pipes briar and meerschaum. I also have a whole mess of very good cigars stored very carefully in zip lock bags (they work better than humidors). And I don't smoke nearly enough.
The last time I smoked? Not sure, but it was over a month ago. I also dring beer. Not nearly as much as I would like to. Big and very very strong beer, belgian, Imperial stouts, barleywines.

I'm addicted to neither alcohol or tobacco although my father is addicted to both.

I consider the above luxuries, and not staples of my life, although I do enjoy them. Some people are able to do this, others are not. I control my behavior with them to make sure that I will not become addicted.

Self control! Responsibility!

Those who become addicted to anything practice neither self control nor responsibility in their behavior.

And that is that.

But the individuals that have been insulting (I thought two have been, and self-rightous as well), I would suggest that they not enter into any real discussion of issues that cause them to lose perspective, due to emotional distress, fear, or a sense of superiority.

If a guy who spent a long time hitting himself in the hand with a hammer (because he couldn't stop) tried to convince you not to start doing it, would you consider him to have 'lost perspective', or accuse him of being 'emotional' or 'self-righteous'?

Of course, what does he know? He's stupid enough to hit himself in the hand with a hammer. Of course at first he was a 'casual' hand smasher.

If you found these posts insulting, you should see how lung or throat cancer patients get treated.

Crap, I forgot LAST YEAR's New Year's resolution about not trying to change people. I'll recycle it for 2005. Best of luck to you!

Matt89,
Thanks for your concern and "kindly" thoughts on what habits you judge (incorrectly) as overly harmful to my health. Might I suggest though that you look up the U.S. Surgeon Generals report No.1103 page 112..."Pipe smokers who inhale live as long as nonsmokers, and pipe smokers that don't inhale (this would be me) live LONGER than nonsmokers". I'm sure you will choose to believe in whatever you want, but perhaps one shouldn't grasp at what the current social trend is, when being so bold as to insult others with information that may be unfactual at best. Now I know that being the kind, caring, and concerned BITOG member that you are, you will feel better knowing that while I smoke my pipe I may, in fact, out live YOU!

Once you start, don't quit

. The study also showed that pipe smokers that quit have a higher mortality rate than pipe smokers that keep smoking, or non-smokers.

Andrews;

You're obviously a clever guy, and you've outmatched me on the reasarch behind this whole pipe smoker issue. If it's somehow a healthier choice (statistically anyway), then more power to you. I guess I've just never heard a non-smoker so deliberately plan to start using the stuff as to get opinions about it on the internet. Most people just stumble upon tobacco when they are young and regret it when they are old.

My main point is very simply this: You are playing with fire. You say you want to be a 'casual' pipe smoker and enjoy it on your own terms. Good for you...but I'm here to tell you that nicotine doesn't work like that. It's relaxing and enjoyable at first, but play with it long enough and it hardwires itself into your nervous system, and you wake up one day realizing that you don't own it anymore, it owns you. Picture Smeagol from the Lord of the Rings.

So, I've been wasting my time arguing about this with you because I don't want you to make the same dumba** mistakes I've made. Maybe you really won't inhale/absorb any of the stuff and it won't turn you into a freakin' slave, I really hope that's true. But my standing advice to anybody I give a crap about is to avoid it altogether.

In the end the choice is up to you and I wish you the best of luck.

Clement;

Don't be too quick to take credit for your good fortune. For some guys one time is too many when it comes to alcohol or drugs.

Matt89,
I truly understand the advice you're giving me and will accept it as having value. Just understand that I do grasp the addiction properties of tobacco and that I have done some research about it. Could I possibly become addicted? Yes. Will I accept my full responsibility if I do? Yes. Can I die of cancer from pipe smoking? Yes. Is it probable? No, not at all. Will I live longer having pipe smoked? I seriously doubt it. But the ultimate question is thus.....did I live my life the way I wanted to and experienced the complexities and desires of a REAL human being.....or did I live in fear and allow society to decide my fate and not my own free will?!
Thanks for the comments anyway, I will keep it in the back of my mind.

I smoked a pipe for about 20 years and loved it. I smoked it almost constantly and have 4 or 5 so they could cool off! I was having some sores in my mouth and my doctor told me I would be in big trouble it I didn't quit. Tried pretty hard but didn't quit until a fellow I knew had to have his lower jaw and part of his face removed from cancer. That scared me so I decided to quite.

I think if you do it in moderation you will be OK but don't do like I did. I liked Dr Grabow briar pipes with a filter that would catch the juices. My favorite tobacco was Borkum Riff Burbon flavored. Its fun to try different tobaccos.

Good luck

Thanks Stink!
I plan on only smoking a bowl or two a day.....if I even feel like that much. I read on a web site that if you move the pipe around and don't smoke it in one position, the odds are even better that your mouth will remain healthy. Also it said not to drink booze while you smoke because it removes a protective mucus layer from your tongue.
I'm looking forward to trying some aromatic tobacco's as well as the other types. I had no idea that it was such a sub-culture activity. Very interesting just reading the various web sites about the "art" of pipe smoking. It looks like I will need many pipes and other "stuff" to really get into it..... king of like a hobby. Some people collect rare pipes and hardly even smoke more than I will.

Clement,
Thanks for a level headed and considerate response to my inquiries. I expected the usual judgement posts when I brought up the ever-evil subject of "tobacco"

. Most of the responses to my questions have been informative and very helpful. Some others have been well intentioned and offered warnings....this is fine and welcomed. But the individuals that have been insulting (I thought two have been, and self-rightous as well), I would suggest that they not enter into any real discussion of issues that cause them to lose perspective, due to emotional distress, fear, or a sense of superiority.
The facts about any type of smoking is published and available, ad nauseam, and you would have to live in a cave to not have been exposed to them.
That said, I hope to enjoy my pipe smoking. If not, I'll stop and take up some other "dangerous" endeavour.... wait a second, I already do! (I eat BigMacs, drink coffee, eat irradiated food, and believe in the war in Iraq!).

Amkeer,
With pipe tobacco one does not inhale smoke into the lungs. This is a common misconception.

If a person can truly limit their amount of pipe smoking to just a little bit once in a while, I don't think it would be harmful. Especially if you don't inhale the smoke.

That is a lot different then smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

andrews if I am ever able to retire and able to do more fishing, I might take up pipe smoking myself (on rare occasions and while fishing). The smoke seems to keep gnats and flies away. Pipe smoking is actually kind of useful if you go fishing.

Now, if it became a problem where I was starting to need to smoke a pipe constantly I would force myself to give it up.

Kind of like if you just occasionally drink a beer or some wine and never get intoxicated, where is the problem? But if you start drinking constantly and get intoxicated there is a problem.

People in this society often seem to be unable to limit themselves to what is reasonable.

andrews, you do what you want to do. Occasional pipe smoking will probably not be harmful. But somebody smoking a pack of cigarettes a day is asking for trouble.

Mystic,
Thanks for the advice and comments. I do self regulate my wine/beer intake the same as I will the pipe smoking. I used to drink more booze than I should so I stopped altogether. Now all I will drink is a glass of wine every few days or a bottle of beer or two on mostly special occasions. Knowing myself the way I do I'm very certain that my pipe smoking will be (has already begun) only once or twice a day and NEVER will I inhale. I intend on trying every brand and type of pipe tobacco that suits my fancy. I believe that my life will be enriched by it.... if not, I'll stop.

I use to smoke pipes. I enjoyed Tinderbox tobbacco and bought most of my pipes there. It is important to smoke slow to avoid 'bite'. Get in the habit of swallowing often or saliva in the stem will find its way back in your mouth which wil carry horrid flavors.
I gave my pipes away except for my carved meerschaums. My favorite smoker was a Peterson which had a curved stem. The smoke was deliverd by a hole driled in the top to direct smoke away from the tongue. Same pipe smoked by Lee Van Cleef in the Italian weterns.
I have thought about starting again but I had surgery for sleep aepnea and my nose will never completely heal. Probably not good to expose open tissue to nicotine.

Thanks Manicrodder,
I looked up the pipes you mentioned and found some to be very nice looking. I think they may be out of my budget for now though. I have a Tinderbox store near my home and plan on visiting them next week. I'm leaning towards buying a couple of estate pipes (used) so that I can save money and be assured that they are broken in properly. I have a question for you about the Meershaum pipes. Do they darken as they age or do they stay real white for the most part? I think the carving on some is rather beautiful but I'm not crazy about the white color.

These pipes do darken to brown or cherry as they are smoked. They provide the ideal smoke in my opinion. However, they are delicate. The shank is drilled to fit the connection at the stem and you must be carefful when removing ash from the bowl. Use the spoon of your tamper or smoker's tool and no knocking aginst your hand, etc. You must also not touch the bowl when it is hot. Wax is applied which causes the coloration. When the hot bowl is touched the wax is transferred to the fingers which ruins any possible change in coloration. These fine pipes lend themselves to true leisure smoking only.
