I bought a Burris RT6 1-6x24 variable scope a while back for my M4. Of course, the ballistic holdovers are calibrated for 5.56mm, but it will still work fine as long as I don't try to use the ballistic holdovers. But it is easy to mount on the AR-10 with the Burris QD mounts I have for it. The scope was a great deal at less than $300 from SportOptics.com.

I'll probably eventually get the M&P its own optic. I think I might want something with a little more magnification. I think it would be cool to free-float the barrel on the M&P, also.

Yes, I will, eventually. I’m already not much of a fan of the furniture. But hey, Smith sells this gun to be a decent platform for mods.

But yeah, here’s a list of what I’d like to do:

- Grip
- Stock
- Free float barrel
- Muzzle brake
- Recoil-absorbing buttpad
- Match-grade trigger
- Scope (need to research this. I think I’d like something with more magnification than the 1-6x I have now).

I would have preferred an 18” barrel. But the model with the 18” barrel’s MSRP is around $500 more. For the marginal velocity increase, it’s not worth it IMO.

I want to order some bulk ammo, a few hundred rounds of some different bullet weights, but I should probably do some testing first.

Nice looking rifle John!

I would be curious what the break in directions are from S&W. DPMS wanted me to clean the barrel every five rounds for the 1st 100. I used a bore snake to do that and now, it’s a very accurate (1 MOA with me shooting, and I’m no expert on precision shooting).

I have found that my DPMS (again, similar, not the same) is picky about lube. It doesn’t like to be run dry. It doesn’t like thin oils, they don’t hold up, and will give trouble at the 50-75 round mark.

It likes the AMSOIL (Thanks, Pablo) and will run all day if lubed generously with that.

It even likes TW-25B (thin synthetic gun grease).

I’ll be curious to read your range report.

That's surprising about your SOCOM! I would have guessed an M1A would eat anything. Maybe that's due to the shorter barrel changing the tuning of the gas system?

There is no mention of any break-in procedure in the manual.

I'll be using synthetic motor oil for lube. Whatever's left over from my oil changes, so, PPPP or M1.
