Sludgy 1990 F150 5.0

Yes, and that reason is people are gullible and will believe anything you slap on a label.
Some stil exist but are not used much at all (Slick 50, etc.)
MMO has been popular and endured for over 100 years. If that doesn't tell you something nothing will.

I guess the only acceptable answer here is "HLP for everything" it seems. Anything outside that better put the flamesuit on.

It tells you people have been gullible for 100 years. MMO is nothing more than some alcohol in pale oil. The profit margin is in the tens of thousands percentage. Here's what MMO does to Mobil 1 in RPVOT oxidation testing. Moving the spike leftwards is never a good thing.

I'm not saying HPL for everything. I'm saying the only thing that belongs in an engine's crankcase, for any sort of beneficial purpose, is fully formulated engine oil. Valvoline's new Restore and Protect would be a great option for the OP. He's using Mobil 1 Euro 0w40 which is known to run clean. There's absolutely zero justification for a supplement. If your oil needs a supplement, you're using the wrong oil.

Time for another installment. Has been my son's daily driver, getting about 17 MPG. New fuel filter, a good used exhaust manifold as the original was cracked and the rest of the exhaust replaced with a single Cat and a new O2 sensor. Air pump system deleted as well.

Hit 140,000 miles. 5k on Castrol Edge 5w30 with a metal backed Fram Ultra. Much cleaner this round.

What's with all the ferrous debris on the magnets? Something is eating itself alive ... cam perhaps?

You better watch it, If thats really the case you are up in the face of a very important line of HPL products here. You are directly calling all HPL products worthless! It won't be smiled upon.

Are you really going on record with that statement? Don't be so gullible. It won't go well for you at all.

Thought we were putting in Valvoline Restore and Protect 5-30 but one of the containers is just the Extended Protection, 5-quart jugs look too similar. This went in first so one quart will be Valvoline Restore and Protect and as the level goes down because of the pan leak and some burning several more quarts will get mixed in. Also, another Fram Ultra was spun on.

I have been following since you started this thread. Was wondering if you were going to Valvoline Restore and Protect route down the rabbit hole.

IMO it was a good idea to wait before going down that road, quick oil changes to flush all that crud out first. It does appear to have gotten better but there is a lot left in there that's still coming out.

Truck is at about 150k. Another oil change dumping Valvoline Extended with a Carquest Premium filter. Nothing in the filter but as my son had some oil leaks he took it down to correctly seal it all back up including the timing chain area. The chain area is looking pretty good and was not dry this time. Cam cover removed and cleaned but he said it was fairly clean back there. Nothing really in the filter so no pictures to show there.

Drain pan had a bit of solids but were not hard and were soft between my fingers. Valvoline 5-30 R&P installed with a New Carquest Premium filter. Plan to run it 2k then dump it. Used our last Fram Ultra but we suddenly heard main bearing noise for 3 seconds. Tried again after it cooled and heard it again, never heard this before. Swapped in the Carquest and drove it for a week with no start up issues.

Truck died on us yesterday. A grey Motorcraft ICM had died, it had been relocated to the fender a while ago. The old original ICM was re-installed and it fired right up. Confidence in the truck has taken a hit as we were stranded on a busy highway, cops came and they called a tow truck. The race was on to get it out of the road. We won and it is back in the Ford side of the garage.

So, you got the truck in late 2020 with 120K miles on it and was heavily sludged. But at that time Valvoline R&P was not available. Now the truck has 150K.

What oils did you run for those 30K miles, besides Mobil 1 EP HM 5W-30, Mobil 1 FS 0W-40, and VRP 5W-30?
Did you run any engine cleaners like the HPL one?
Also, how many cycles with Valvoline R&P did you do and what is the total mileage with that oil?
