Pretty good advise given here. Reading through the thread again I come up with this question. It is probably best to drop the pan, clean the [censored] out, and pull the valve cover/covers to get as much as crud as possible out of the engine. Many of us can do that, others can't. What happens to the guy that can't do that? Does he take a shot at a product like MMO and go for frequent short OCI's and hopes nothing breaks off and ruins the bearings or clogs up the oil pump? Or does he say screw it and keeps driving and changing his oil and filters as per a severe service interval, and again hopes nothing comes loose and takes out the engine? Just wondering?

Honestly, most folks would probably never know. In fact, if it hadn't been for me changing the valve cover gasket, I would have never known. Its not something that's readily apparent on a simple oil change, and without pulling the valve cover, most people would never see how good a job (or bad) the oil is doing.

agreed!!

also to the op
do you think it would be a good idea to pull the pan after the oci to check the screen again? i would worry that some stuff would eventually make its way down there. i know its a pain, but....

Wow, could be used in a textbook for a sludge example. Maybe the engine is running cold. I thinks others have mentioned, take the head off, if possible. I would do that and have it cleaned at an engine shop, that's just too much sludge to dissolve away safely I would say.

It's a testament to American quality that this 4/6 AMC origin engine, I believe, can take such a licking, and keep on ticking.

I would not. I'd stick with plenty off MMO and freq oil changes with filters each time and stick with it. As we can see even with all the sludge that you had on the head the oil pick up was FINE. So if anything gets on it the MMO will take care of it sometime.

If you want to take it off just to be sure and take photos for everyone here, yes you can be a hero! But I'd not bother.

I have to call you on this. Taking the engine out is the right solution. Carefully removing the sludge with negative pressure applied via a shop-vac is great. Using detergents and compressed air is not correct when the engine is still assembled - and it's a bad idea. BTW, this is a great place to use the shop vac, and old toothbrush and WD-40.

It wouldn't be a bad idea, even though it does take some work getting the pan off. The worst thing that can happen now it clogging the screen and starving oil to the rest of the engine. Of course, this should manifest as a drop in oil pressure, which I should be able to see on my oil pressure gauge.

My plan is to do two cycles of oil changes with MMO, then pull the valve cover and oil pan to see how she looks.

ive done a kia 4 cyl and a sbc no ill affects. i think the main thing is getting all out and priming the system before start up. GUESS IM JUST AN INCORRECT GUY

1: buy 3 jugs of Pennzoil conventional
2: buy 3 oil filters
3: Change the oil to Pennzoil conventional, let oil run 500 miles with some auto RX added near the end of the 500 miles.
4: repeat 2 other times.

Or if you want something that will actually work and don't want to spend as much $$$....

Buy the same jugs of Pennzoil conventional.
Fill the crankcase with 1qt MMO and remainder with Pennzoil conventional.
Dump the oil and filter after 1000 miles or when the oil begins to look like Bosco on the dipstick.
Repeat.
After a 2-3 cycles of that, lengthen the interval to 3000 miles.

Pop off the cover again for S&G's and snap some pics.

Good luck!

If I lived closer, I'd help you pull the head and really clean the Heep out. Jeep engines are some of the easiest to work on.

Despite all the sludge though, I think she'll be OK. I've used AutoRx with great results, but I also like MMO. I'd probably do a few runs on Delo SAE30 with some MMO (obviously, not 'til summer here, it was 7 this morning).

I think a few guys really like the Rotella 10W30 and that would be a great choice too.

Since you have good oil pressure, the screen is clean, and there are no abnormal noises, etc..

I woudld *love* to see how plain Pennzoil conventional does in that engine. No additives, no nothing. Just the oil. (Not a big fan of additives anyway)

Then we can really see just how much sludge it can clean up. It makes big claims, let's see if it stacks up.

I like Pennzoil too i have some in stash but a run of the mill conventional? against this stuff?....no

Haha..yeah. I'm not sure it would do much either.

But how do we know? If there ever was an engine to try it on..this is it.

C'mon guys!! Up to 40% of sludge removed in the first oil change?? Don't you believe the hype?

To really do it right, the head should come off. I hope I have SOME defenders with me on that one.
