It's gonna be a while, he doesn't drive it that much, might as well relax and have a cold one

Hey, I'm up to almost 75 miles!!

I wanted to drive it to work, but its simply been to cold in the mornings. I work 7p-7a, and our morning temps have been in the 20's the last couple of days. I honestly have no desire to drive home at 0730 in this Jeep when its 29* outside!!

I did get a little more done on the Jeep today, though. I welded up an exhaust leak just forward of the muffler, and changed out the transfer case fluid. Just need to drive it a bit more, so I can check and see my progress!
 
Jas- How did that transfer case oil look? I'm assuming it was the original fluid, and that would be over 150k and fifteen years correct?

The transfer case fluid was a grey color, and I doubt it was the original fluid from the factory. I do know it was overfilled, as it was coming out of the fill hole before I dumped the stuff. I am not sure what was used, but it did look a little "thicker" than straight ATF. I may do one more change when I do my first post-MMO oil change and see what it looks like then.
 
what did you put back in the trans case?
rp makes a fluid for stuff like that, well i think its for standard trans that take atf but i would think it works better than atf in a gear application like that. just a thought

I used normal, off the shelf, ATF from Advance. Its actually kind of funny to me, the transfer case calls for ATF, whereas the transmission in the Jeep calls for 10w30!

Yes, I work intensive care. I guess the hours kind of give it away.

The transfer case is not a gear application. It is chain driven.

so it doesn't have gears in it? i believe they all do have gears in them from what i have seen. should have 2 sets for hi and low
but it does not matter its off topic anyway the thread is sludge

How a transfer case drives the front output shaft refers to what type it is. This particlar model uses a chain to transmit power from the mainshaft to the front output shaft. Transfer cases that typically use gear oil have a set of gears that transmit power to the front output. Hence, chain drive vs. gear drive.

Typically: Chaindriven cases(like the OP's NP231) use ATF and gear drive cases(like an older Jeep Dana 20 or Dana 300) use gear oil. I'm sure there are some cases that may use non-typical fluids for it's type, but in this case, ATF is used by design.

Also, you are correct, that there is a set of gears in the NP231, but it is a planetary gearset used for low range. The front output is still driven by the chain.
 
back to my question would Royal Purple benefit this application?

the manufacturer claim:

Synchromax is recommended for manual transmissions that specify an automatic transmission fluid. It’s also ideal for 4×4 transfer cases and motorcycle gear boxes. Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials. It provides excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.
 
I don't think there would be any added benefit of running Synchromax in an NP231 over ATF+4. These cases go hundreds of thousands of miles on obsolete Dexron III.

I do run Mobil 1 Multi Veh ATF in my trail Jeep's NP231HD, but I found it for $3/qt. Otherwise, I would run ATF+4 like the rest of my Jeeps (that specify ATF in the T-case).
 
Sorry, no update. I've only gotten to about 125 miles so far, so I need another 375 to the first filter change. I'll try and put another 50 miles on tomorrow, maybe more on Thursday. My goal is to have 500 by early January, so we'll see!

So, at this rate, I should have a couple of cycles of MMO through and the valve cover back off by 2013!

Whatever approach you take, I'd make sure you have a fresh, decent quality oil filter in place at all times. When / if your cleaning efforts break loose a chunk of gunk, you are counting on the filter to catch it. If the filter is plugged, or in bypass for any reason, the clot may find its way to a narrow passageway and cause oils starvation.

To help prevent filter bypass mode, i'd run a 0 or 5W-x oil (thinner when cold) and be very careful to avoid revving the engine before it warms up.

IMO, it will take many oil change cycles before your engine begins to approach 'clean.' I'd buy lots of any decent quality dino - whatever's on sale. Change it and the filter every few hundred miles. Cut open your used filters to evaluate how much chunky gunk is being produced by the cleaning process. Adjust filter-change interval as needed.

IMO, running something expensive like Redline or RP is a waste. While these may (or may not) clean better / faster than conventional, any oil will have limited goop carrying capacity. With all the junk in your engine, the oil will quickly saturate - at which time it's appropriate to change it.

If adding some miracle oil solvent, don't get carried away! Too much may result in great globs of goo breaking loose all at once, overwhelming the filtering system.
