can you cut the next filter the 'normal' way? cut around the circumfrince(sp), not through it. Youll end up with 95% of the can intact, with just the top of the filter removed. That way you can remove the pleats, stretch em out and see how much cerapp is being caught

I had an 87 Grand Am once with the 2.5 in it. All city miles and tons of sludge when I got it. I cleaned out the top end as best I could. Removed the rocker arms and cleaned them off on a wire wheel, soaked the push rods as well. Engine was so much happier after all of that. Never sludged up again. It was a pretty happy engine after that running on Mobil 1 or Redline oil.
WOW first time I seen this thread and I almost vomitted looking at those pics. I have a 99 Rodeo that blew it's transmission and I'm afraid to open up the engine to see what it looks like. It consumes a quart of oil every 500 miles and my wife drove it one time wher eit was 2 and a half quarts low. If I can't get the transmission repaired I'll tear apart the engine. It's sitting at 94K right now.

That is.the reason I change my oil at 3000. I know they say you can go longer but I've never seen harm done by doing it more often. And it gives the DIY time to check and inspect things more often which is the most important reason to change your oil every 3k. Do sweat it though those 2.5l are pretty bullet proof. My buddy had one in high school and that thing took more abuse then any engine I've ever seen. And if it was mine I would run house brand motor oil and mmo and be changing it every 500-1000 miles for a couple months Atleast. But thats just me

True. I love all the photo updates with this one. That filter does show some good progess though... Love to see a recent valve cover pic.

I love sludge threads. And hate them at the same time.
I put a quart of oil in my aunt's 2002 Focus today. Just out of curiosity, i checked the oil level. After concluding that it did not look right and finding something to wipe off the dipstick (it was on the dipstick but not conveying it was the actual oil level,) sure enough.. low. Bought Super Tech 5W-20 and put in a nice, soild quart. (And yes i bought the 5-qt. jug. XOM.)
Maybe i should post up a "through the fill hole" pic, though my aunt is finicky about me going under the hood of her car.
I hope one quart was enough, that transmission makes that engine work soo hard and the Check Engine light is on (PCV issue, infamous) that i actually want to see if it was low more than a quart. That Super Tech 5W-20 is really lubricating it on the ollllldddd oil that is presently in there, i hope.
Her car also gets 17MPG, it needs a new transmission like yesterday
