This morning I was behind this Doofis in a P/U truck that was holding everyone up on the main road. I was hoping he wouldnt turn off on the side road that I continue on in my morning journey to work. Well, but of course he goes my way! Any way,he continues to go at a snail pace so I go to finally pass this Goober, and he decides to make a left in front of me (just as I floored it! with no turn signal on either!) I slam on my brakes so fast/hard that the anti lock part of the system was surprised! of course I did the horn blowing thing, along with a few choice words and continued on my way. (glad that that ordeal was behind me.)

Then I started thinking,Gee I hope my vehicle doesnt suffer any consequences from this? I remember years back when I had a little Oldsmobile Forenza S/W. I was traveling East on a local artery doing around 60+,when all of a sudden this woman pulls right out in front of me!. I slammed on my brakes (didnt bother blowing that stupid weak horn) the car was fish tailing like I was on a slippery surface. Then as I proceed on my way,I noticed the car was running like *****! Like the timing was bumped back.

The first thing that came to my mind was the timing belt jumped. At the time I worked for a GM dealership,so I got back to the shop, plug in our scanner,no codes. Ok,then I reset the ecm, went out for a drive, and the car was back to normal. All from this d umb that pulled out in front of me. So I guess what I`m saying is things can/do happen from this sort of thing. Any one else with similar stories? I probably shouldnt say this, but I will. When someone pulls out in front of me like that, with no regard to myself or my family. I would LOVE to you know...let them know how I feel?

I've had many experiences like that. People don't know how to drive around here. I've had to utilize the ABS on my car many a time, especially in the snow/ice and I've never had any problems with it running weird after that.

I had a 91 Corolla with a little over 200,000 miles. Locked up the brakes avoiding a deer so hard I probably stopped the engine as well as it was a manual. The alternator died during the incident, I assume from the shock of the sudden stop.

Somebody pulled into traffic off the shoulder in front of me on a freeway after they had stopped. I was going 60 mph and had slam on the brakes in my '98 Chev K1500 and get down to about 5 mph in a few car-lengths. I just about rear-ended this woman.

Anyhow, as soon as I slammed on the brakes I heard a grinding and when I got the truck home and pulled the wheel/caliper off, I discovered that the friction material on one brake pad had cracked and broken off on one side. My front brake pads were at about 20% at the time.

Because of this, I was basically metal on metal and had to get the rotor machined and new brake pads.

Never knew that could happen, as the friction material will usually stay intact until the pad wears out, but I don't think I've ever slammed on my brakes that hard before or since.

This happens many times on two-lane roads, where someone decides to turn left just as you decide to pass. It can easily be avoided if, 1) the guy would use his blinker to signal his intention of turning left, and 2) he kept one eye on the rearview mirror to see what you're doing. You can't fix stupid. You can only pray that you don't bump into them.

I had to do a "panic" stop one day when some woman pulled out in front of me with her Lexus. I was doing 45 (speed limit) in my old Fox body Cougar. I had JUST installed brand new Continental ContiExtremeContacts on bigger wheels, and they GRIPPED LIKE DEATH and allowed me to have a few feet to spare. I thought "Wow, she aughta thank her guardian angel and reimburse me for my tires!"

I'm lucky enough that when ever the weather is bad I'm at work by 3:30 am, so I avoid all the idiots. Then I just have to keep myself out of trouble.

The worst I've ever had from something like that was knocking the alignment out when I started skidding during an evasive manuever. I slid a bit then hit semi-dry pavement. That was a feeling I don't care to have again.

I'm willing to bet that what happened is you stopped so hard that the fuel pickup in the tank sucked up some air when the fuel sloshed to the front of the tank. This can happen even on 3/4 tank full. I have noticed that GM fuel gages read low when the car is slowing down.

My work is a left turn on about the only straightaway in a long while. There's a double yellow there though, maybe because of the road entrance. I fear getting it in my driver's door when some yahoo a few cars back decides to pass. Fortunately the straight part is just far enough back the idiots that are going to pass make their move. Yes I signal but it can be blocked by the car right behind me... the types who pass on double yellows also pass whole stacks of cars at a time.

It's a bit unnatural to look in my driver's side rearview mirror as preperation for a left turn on a 2-lane road, but it might save my bacon sometime.

This weekend I nearly rear ended a bozo driving a late 90's Camry. Guy almost hit me as i tried to go into a lane to the right, so i maneuver back into my lane, he flies by me, so I go into the lane again.

As I get into the lane the idiot going 75 slams his brakes and I nearly go into his backseat because he almost came to a complete stop. My brakes haven't felt the same since, believe they were close to needing replacement and now definitely do. I avoided rear ending him by basically slamming my brakes and maneuvering my SUV to the right even more and whomping on the gas. The idiot then zooms past me again at excess speed! I have no idea why he would need to slam his brakes as there was nothing in front of him, maybe looking for a new car from a rear end collision, no idea. He was a man on a mission that's for sure.

Call up all the auto insurance agencies for a national BITOG association discount.

I feel like going on a Progressive Insurance shpiel now "*discount, ..*discount" lol.

You're lucky you managed to stop in time. My dad was in the same situation you were in, but on a motorcycle. He couldn't stop in time and ended up landing through their windshield (he held onto the bars). Needless to say, no blinker or warning was given and they got the ticket for it as it was in a passing zone.

One of many wrecks he was involved in during his bike days of almost 20 years, rain or shine.

as you can imagine, I was behind a yahoo in a red dakota from rt100 onto 78 east yesterday. the jerk would cut in front of me when I tried to pass, and then sat in the left lane on 78 @ like 60mph, and he kept this up onto 22 even.
would have been funny if it was the same guy.

I know, its horrible. I can guarantee there are people out there who probably intentionally do stuff like this as well. Suffice to say you will be penalized along with them as well.

In NJ, if I park my car in my own driveway and it gets hit. My rates will go up along with theirs. In NJ if you rear end someone 9/10 regardless if its their fault you rear ended them, its your fault and your rates go up. They look at it from an impact PoV.

Sounds like you and I are neighbors!

I was on the OTHER side of a maneuver like that once.... I was slowing to turn (left turn signal ON and had been on for a while) and a twit decides he's gonna pass me on the left anyway. So I just drifted left a bit before the actual turn to make double sure he noticed what was about to happen to him. He didn't and wound up in the ditch mowing weeds with his grille, fortunately there was no oncoming traffic and he didn't kill himself or others.

As for the panic stop hurting anything- I doubt it. All your oil probably rushed to the front of the sump, uncovered the pickup, and the pressure dropped to zero for a few seconds, but that's what film strength and EP additives are for. Might have stressed the engine mounts a bit, and of course all the suspension bushings got compressed... but any car *should* be able to tolerate all that without harm.
