slamming on my brakes really hard!!

So I just drifted left a bit before the actual turn to make double sure he noticed what was about to happen to him. He didn't and wound up in the ditch mowing weeds with his grille, fortunately there was no oncoming traffic and he didn't kill himself or others.

As for the panic stop hurting anything- I doubt it. All your oil probably rushed to the front of the sump, uncovered the pickup, and the pressure dropped to zero for a few seconds, but that's what film strength and EP additives are for. Might have stressed the engine mounts a bit, and of course all the suspension bushings got compressed... but any car *should* be able to tolerate all that without harm.


That very good thinking Magnum! I would not have thought about all of that you mentioned.

it's funny, Ali Davis' trial is going on this week (triple homicide on 13th st)and he's from FREEMANSBURG and his cohorts were from NEWARK! lots of our crime is from out-of-towners.
 
Very unfortunate circumstances. If you follow too close the consequences are spontaneous. Thats why you always look ahead.

Your Dad is was very lucky man for those 20 years....For the most part the bulk of motorcycle crashes down here end up in death...There is usually one death per week down here involving motorcycles...A number of them were decapitated.
 
The only problem I can see is that the brake rotors may now have uneven pad deposits on them, which could cause hard spots and pulsation.
But this is only a possibility. Not likely.

I slammed on my brakes (didnt bother blowing that stupid weak horn) the car was fish tailing like I was on a slippery surface. Then as I proceed on my way,I noticed the car was running like *****! Like the timing was bumped back.

The first thing that came to my mind was the timing belt jumped. At the time I worked for a GM dealership,so I got back to the shop,plug in our scanner,no codes. Ok,then I reset the ecm,went out for a drive,and the car was back to normal. All from this d umb that pulled out in front of me. So I guess what I`m saying is things can/do happen from this sort of thing. Any one else with similar stories? I probably shouldnt say this,but I will. When someone pulls out in front of me like that,with no regard to myself or my family. I would LOVE to you know...let them know how I feel?

His brake lights didn't work when he slowed to make the turn? Or did he just fling it into a left turn at speed?

Should you have realized he was going so slowly because he was planning a turn? The lack of a signal is no excuse, but I suspect there's another side to the story, especially since you can relate multiple stories of panic stops.

I'd avoid passing through intersections. It's usually illegal anyway.

Using the brakes at full potential shouldn't cause problems, other than maybe some pad deposits if you come to a complete stop and hold them there with the brakes hot. Automotive journalists normally test braking from 70 mph, and a car would experience threshold braking before almost every corner on a track day.

I think Kaboomba's fuel system theory is the most likely explanation for the issue with the Forenza.

I've only had to use my Mazda3 brakes at full potential on dry pavement twice, to slow down for deer. I just had to scrub off some speed though; neither involved complete stops. I only had to slam on the brakes once with my previous car, but it died a fraction of a second later.
 
I think the only reason it might not have done anything,is due to the relatively low speed i was traveling. Even though I had just floored it,I was going that fast yet. But my car was probably like: what the *ell are you doing?

Probably eight years ago, I was driving home on a fairly busy but fast two lane.
I came to an intersection.
I had no stop sign, while the crossing road did from both sides.
There was a concrete mixer truck facing me in the opposing lane, waiting to turn left, and there were cars stopped at either side on the crossing road.
I was going about fifty or so, driving one of the old Civics.
On the crossing road to my left, an elderly black guy in an elderly LTD was inching forward through the stop sign.
I thought "well, he must see, me; he's not going to go".
Well, he did.
I locked up all four, killed the engine (not quite quick enough on the clutch), and I avoided the accident.
You would be amazed how short you can stop a car when you have to.
The old fellow in his old Ford went on his way, oblivious.
I looked at the guy driving the cement mixer, crossed myself, restarted the trusty Wagovan, and went on my way.
I reflected that it would have been a shame for my bought new Civic to have come all of 190K just to end its life stuffed into the side of an old Ford.
The moral is to be observant and be prepared.
