Skipping oil filter change

So I’m considering changing my engine oil filter every other oil change and like some input. So my 2021 Subaru Outback 2.5 NA averages roughly 6k miles a year. So it gets an oil change every 6 months/ 3k miles. Currently running Amsoil OE 0W20 and Amsoil EA15K13 filter. I don’t mind spending $10 every oil change for a filter so cost isn’t an issue. However I feel like I’m tossing a good filter out too early. No I’m not going run a cheaper filter. I’m sticking with the amsoil filter.
Care and feeding of eight subaru of all kinds over the past three decades - and plenty of FB engine experience.

Change the filter each OCI. Subaru has returned to quality Tokyo Roki filters after using blue painted Fram for over a decade in the U.S. as a service part.

Run the Tokyo Roki. Change it each OCI. 2x oci per year Spring/ Fall.

I would suggest running the service part and bottled Subaru/ Idemitsu oil also.,

It's better performing than any premium oil I have run by far.

There's nothing wrong with using a filter for 6k / 1 year, regardless of the number of OCIs.

That Amsoil filter has a bypass rating of 11-17 psi. The Subaru spec is 23 psi. Unless this filter has unusually low restriction, it's going to be bypassing oil quite often on a Subaru, due to the high flow oil pumps used on these cars.

If you want a filter with good efficiency that won't bypass unfiltered oil, I'd suggest the PurolatorOne PL14615 or the Purolator BOSS PBL14615. They're the only high efficiency filters I'm aware of that won't bypass on Subarus.
That subject has been discussed and addressed by several filter brands. The Amsoil filter just like the fram have very good oil flow properties with their quality media. Besides I’m not worried about bypassing events. Their usually uncommon and very short in duration. Like I mentioned earlier I’m sticking with the Amsoil filter.

My vote is keep changing the filter everytime. I’d want to get as much of the diluted oil out as possible. I know we aren’t talking about much oil, but keep in mind, we aren’t talking about much money either.
The filter is mounted at the top side of the engine. There is almost zero oil mess removing it.

Nothing scientific or even supported by a chemical analysis or specific study….
My opinion only…the clean oil with its fresh detergent package acts as a cleaning agent to include the used oil filter. Don’t think I want my new oil to get that what’s trapped in the old filter to degrade the oil. Filter is $8. New oil is triple that cost unless you are using Walmart Supercheap.

The filter can easily do anything mentioned - but with known dilution a 5W30 could be the ticket to 5k OCI’s - filter at 10k …
I may try 0W30 someday due to living in MN with frigid cold starts.

Fair point.

You obviously missed the point of my question. It’s more about reducing waste than spending money at this point.
Reduce waste elsewhere. One oil filter a year is not going to save the planet or impact your finances in any meaningful way, unless you are living in extreme poverty. Which I highly doubt based on your vehicle and oil/filter preferences.

I agree with the poster you are responding to, you seem to be more interested in defending your position than actually looking for advice.

Do you take a shower and not use soap or shampoo?

Just changed the oil in the Mercedes @ 1 year interval. Oil filter was not changed last year, and I couldn't see any difference.
The only thing that was a little worrying is that the O ring seals were a bit tougher to remove. Not enough to damage anything.
I use MB parts, which have the white silicone ADB valve, that part was fine and still flexible. In the end the filter stayed on that engine for about 10,000 miles/ 2 years.

If there is zero mess when removed, then the filter must be draining out by itself. So no reason to try and drain it. Don't disturb the gasket is the best practice - it will have some permanent compression set from being installed.

The filter mentioned should have no issue in 6k miles. Changing the oil, theoretically, would give the filter more life anyways.

These filter brands address it by just saying "don't worry, our filter has low enough restriction, trust us". I've seen differential pressure tests for around a dozen filters, including the Fram Ultra (which has pretty average restriction). Not one of these filters will remain under 12 psi with the 60+ L/min the oil pumps on these cars produce.

The more restrictive ones can barely do 35 L/min. They will be bypassing at high rpm even when the oil is warm, and will be bypassing continuously even at low rpm when the oil is cold.
