Should I change Oil Weight ( Texas Summer )

I currently use 5w30, which is what my truck recommends. I heard it would help
if I changed I to 10w30. Is this true? and how so?

Facts:
2002 Silverado
4.3 V6
190,000
OIL CURRENTLY USING : Mobil 1 HIGH MILAGE
5w30
Location: Texas
Oil Filter MOBIL 1

Also, it would still be the same 30 weight when hot. Keep using Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30, that's some good oil all year round.

I wouldn't bother changing a thing. Good combo and it wont make a difference really in the summer.

I doubt that old-school GM motor cares that much about what it has in it. I'd run 10W30 if it was on sale, but only for that reason. 10W30 and 5W30 are the same hot viscosity.

Don't know where you are, I know Texas can get some cold, but I doubt it gets cold enough that 10W would be an issue. So it ought to be fine for year-round usage.

I know there used to be issues with high levels of VI's with large splits on the winter weight vs hot weight, but that was in the past.

IIRC you run pretty short OCI intervals (according to your other thread, 3k usually, and 5k very recently), so I'm not sure what is gained by over-thinking this. Not unless if you are planning on lengthening your OCI.

Just keep using the 5w30. If your truck is alive and kicking then I suppose the oil is not causing any issues.

Oh please. I used the thinnest version of M1 in a 5.4L and had none of the "noise" you are attempting to describe.

+1....Continue to use 5w20. IMO....There will be no advantage to switching to 10w30.

10w30 and 5w30 will perform EXACTLY the same in the summer. Its in the winter that the 5w30 will (possibly) flow better when you first start it. But honestly, it doesn't even get cold enough in most of Texas to show the difference.

10w30 is an old spec oil- very few manufacturers have recommended it in the past 20 years. Some (me included) have a hunch that oil blenders 'throw away' their poorest base stock at 10w30 since its so easy to meet the spec with just a few viscosity modifiers. But that's not to say that there aren't also really good 10w30s out there

Go 5w30 or 0w30 year-round. More of a known quantity regardless of brand/sub-brand, etc.

I suggest Rotella T6 in 5w 40 for the warm months. Ignore those who will tell you how your engine will shudder and fail because you used 5w 40 in your 100 degree summers. FOr those who claim that "oil temp always stays the same" I suggest that may be true until the cooling system is maxed out on a killer summer day in the south.
