My car Civic calls for 5w30 weight oil. It states in the summer 10w30 can be used >20F. I took my car to Walmart and had them change oil with Mobil 1/SuperTech filter however they incorrectly placed 10W30 into it. I know now it does not matter currently in the summer however the oil will be run into December (7500 miles) where temp drops on average to around 30F with occasional dips to 15F. Should I take back (a hassle) or will it be fine since 10W30 synthetic flows better anyway in the cold I imagine than 5w30 conventional (recommend oil).

You should be fine. 10w30 is supposed to be good down to 0F. And with Mobil 1 it will flow better than a conventional oil, so you probably could run Mobil 1 10w30 year-round, even if dips below zero F.

Before today's 5w30 oil was available, most cars made do with conventional 10w30 in the winter. This included the late 70's when most of us saw much colder winters than this year is likely to be. I agree with TallPaul, that the engine will be fine with Mobil 1 10w30 into December.

Too bad nobody can get anything right.

I wouldn't worry about 10w30 if it's only getting down to 15F especially if it's Mobil 1.

Thanks for the reply's/confidence. Its really too bad as Walmart only charged $42.00 for the Mobil 1 oil change along with swapping my winter wheels to summer wheels. They even screwed up the placement of summer wheels and I insisted they rotate them from last postion marked. At least the oil level is exactly correct as most places overfill it since it holds 3.7QTs not 4 qts.

Thankfully I only take the car in every 6 months at this point in its life.

I would use the time between now and your next oil change to find another place to get your oil changed. You need to have confidence in the people working on your car!

Have you considered changing the oil yourself?

I have a new Civic - it will have its first oil change (3750 miles) next week with Mobil 1 5w30. I will be interested to hear about your experiences with Mobil 1 in your engine.

Best Wishes as you motor along!
