I still don't really feel the need to be prepared for a home invasion, but the .22lr is always ready for the fox or coyote, and I suppose its better than nothing if someone was breaking in while we're home.

Guess im glad i dont feel the need for it. I live in a safe suburb. Like Overkill mentioned the rules here make it difficult to be worthwhile. I keep a bat under my bed and im well versed in self defence.

Mossberg 500 12ga. with slug barrel.

Not so much for intruders but there are a lot of bears around here. Some are very, very large. Here's one I saw while heading to work a couple weeks ago about a mile from my house:

Of course God Forbid if someone decides to do something stupid it's available for that too. I know the slug isn't the best for that situation but...

I used to keep a M1 Carbine with a 30 round magazine handy when I was a bachelor. Later, I kept a Remington 870 12 gauge handy, in its simple bird hunting configuration. Now I keep an Astra A-75 in either 9mm or .40 S&W handy, after taking numerous NRA hangun training courses including Defensive Pistol, improving my handgun proficiency. Next month I'm signed up for NRA Defensive Shotgun training, it'll be interesting to see what I learn from that.

Where do I live? Currently, in the 7th largest city in the USA, with criminal activity linked primarily to drug cartels and MS-13 rampant. There were 2 incidents involving gunplay (multiple shots / handun mag dump at a residence from a vehilce on the street) already in the 2 years we've lived here, in the toniest neighborhood I've ever lived in.

LOL!!!

I bought a Ruger SR9 about a year ago. I have no time to go to a range to shoot, with my work schedule. Thus I just put it out on armslist today.

To each their own, but in a home defense shooting, My Browning Maxus w/ Full choke and either BBB or Turkey loads will do way more damage to the unlucky person, than a handgun will....

a shotgun at home is useful insurance, no area is totally safe always. anybody who has been in a precarious situation knows how quickly and badly things fall apart. imho baseball bats or single weight motor oils don’t cut it when it comes to optimal home or engine protection. a shotgun and a multiweight motor oil offer the best solutions. there are plenty of utube videos on the safe and effective use of a shotgun in home defense, and plenty of techniques that correctly place the shotgun as the last line in a layered defense. if a bad guy gets past the stoutly locked front door, a barking dog, warnings that the homeowner has called the cops and is armed, and starts banging on door of your family’s safe room, he isn’t there to play little league with you and your bat.

That pretty much blows. I'll be moving out of state if it turns into that here, which certain cities are pushing, but they are getting sued over it.

Places like Akron, OH.: https://www.ohio.com/akron/news/local/re...k-into-her-home

And Yukon, OK: https://newsok.com/article/5603065/yukon...l-police-arrive

Or Philadelphia, PA: https://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2018/05/05/70-year-old-woman-shoots-burglar-home-invasion/

Or Ocala, FL: http://www.ocala.com/news/20180520/man-in-critical-condition-after-home-intruder-shooting

But of course something like the above could never happen in Staten Island, could it? https://www.amny.com/news/police-involved-shooting-staten-island-1.17667037

It can, but our crippling drug crisis is just a little more concerning

If you have a gun, and police say drop it, I have no sympathy for anything that happens if you don't comply

Most people don't want to keep even a long gun here, thanks to our really strict Castle Doctrine laws

- Unlock safe or remove trigger lock (guns do not require trigger locks when stored in a safe)
- Retrieve gun
- Load gun (guns cannot be stored loaded)
- Chamber a round
- Respond to threat

Take a good look at this people. There are many in this country who would like to see the same or worse implemented here. This is a recipe for victims, not responders. Insane thinking accompanied with zero common sense. No way I could live in that kind of environment.

The go to guns would be either the 870, or the Mossberg 500. For the car is an Arnis stick. I hope I never have to use any of them.

With kids around though, I can't see storing firearms any other way. I know I don't worry with other kids in the house when all my firearms have a trigger lock on them.
My one gun nut friend though says our gun storage laws could be interpreted as your house being locked up when you are away as the "safe". And when you are home you have "care and control" of the firearms so they could be stored with no trigger locks. I don't know if this theory has been tested in court yet in Ontario.

I live in a small town in Western MA and I find it funny that people think all will always be just fine where they live. About 4 years ago here the leader of a local biker gang and some friends chopped up some guy and threw his remains all over town. Two years ago a local woman woke up to a noise in her house and met some guy wearing a ski mask in her hallway! Luckily her husband had just pulled into the driveway and the perp took off. This year so far some guy killed his pregnant wife while his two other kids watched.

So don't tell me where you live is all nice and safe it is just a matter of time before it happens in your town as well if it can happen in my small town it can happen anywhere. I will keep my shotgun and 9mm to protect my family thanks.

Semi-auto is the best way to go. I have the Mossberg and it's been trouble-free for over 20 years now. Even have the rifled barrel for it, when sabots are needed in deer country where only shotguns are allowed, here in the more populated areas of Southern Michigan.

Rifle hunting is only allowed in Northern Lower Michigan and in the Upper Peninsula. Muzzleloader rifles are also allowed, anywhere in Michigan and I have three of them.
