For simplicity I'd like to keep the discussion between these 2 shotguns in 12 guage. Remington 870 Express, and the New Remington 887, which would you pick and why? From what I've heard the 870 Express is a cheaper version of the 870 Wingmaster,and the chamber on the Express needs to be polished to extact the cheaper ammo, which is what I'd be using. TIA

I own both the 870 Wingmaster and the 870 Express. They share many (most) parts in common. The finish on the barrels/receivers are one major difference. The Wingmaster line is blued for a more premium look, while the Express line has a non-reflective black matte coating. The matte finish doesn't look as nice, but it's much more durable. I reload my own trap loads and use about the dirtiest hulls you've ever seen. There just isn't a problem with ejecting these hulls from either shotgun, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I have the Remington 870 express magnum with the walnut stock. IMO the benefits to the 870 are the amazing amount of quality aftermarket equipment you can purchase for it. I have such a wide variety of aftermarket and OEM gear that I can add on to my shotgun that its awsome. Mainly due to the fact that is used by law enforcement and some militarys.
Its a reliable shot gun that has provenitself time and time again. I have fired over 2k shells out of mine.

I agree on the aftermarket support of the 870.
I own an 870 Super Mag and I simply prefer the pump action because of the simplicity and reliability, especially from the model.
If I remember correctly, this is close to the top of the highest selling model of shotgun (or maybe consumer firearms in general) of all-time.

The 870 is probably the number 1 selling shotgun ever. They are dependable, easy to upgrade, and inexpensive.
I have never had or seen any extraction problems with the express, after a couple hundred rounds the action is as smooth as a wingmaster.
That said, the 887 looks very interesting to me,but there is much more aftermarket support for the 870.

If I were you I would look for an older, used 870. The newer 870's do not compare in quality.

Of those two, the 870 is the better choice. It's a proven design and there are many parts, both OEM and aftermarket available for it. That said, I use my Mossberg 500 for personal defense because it ejects and chambers the next shell _every_ time.

What's the plastic cladding on the 887 like?
I have an older 870 Wingmaster that my Dad gave me. They are very nice shooters and have a slick action. But for around the house use

Cool looking SG, but the salesman brought up a great point. He said if moisture gets thru their "Armor" coating it would be a problem. The gun is new for 2009, so the jury is out on how good that coating is. I might just go with the good olde 870.

And if you are wanting to modify, that aftermarket parts for that gun can be had as plentiful and cheap as you'll find. There is a reason they've sold...10 million or so?...of these things.

Between the two, if resistance to corrosion is an issue, then the 887 is your gun. I dont care the express models. They have a two piece barrel, more plastic internal parts, and are rough until well run in. I saw two jam up in south dakota last year hunting pheasants.
Buy an older Wingmaster 870 if you can find one. The newer Remingtons are much less well fitted and finished compared to the guns made 15 years ago.
For hunting I would go for a Browning BPS if I chose a pump.

I love my 870 Express Magnum and have never had a failure to feed or extract. It is of the older breed, having bought it back in 1994. I dont know how the new models compare.
