My truck has 117,000 miles on it and it has been fed mostly a diet of Mobil 1 and both Pennzoil Yellow Bottle and Platinum. I ALWAYS change my oil on time and now I have switched to Ultra. Should I do a shorter than normal run of Ultra the first time in case it has removed anything from inside the engine? Filter has always been either a Mobil 1 301 or Pure One 30001. Thanks.

I personally wouldn't run Ultra shorter than 5k miles. I'm still debating whether to go 6500 or 7500 miles on PP. I would do Ultra for 7500 without a second thought about it. PP is a great oil. Ultra is probably a huge improvement on even it.

That warranty probably isn't actually good for anything, it would be very hard to prove that engine failure was the fault of the motor oil. It's sort of a thing to get people to buy the product. I would be surprised if SOPUS (or valvoline, since they do the same thing) has, or ever will, pay out on a claim.

Its not a popular topic on the forum but it is a fact none the less.

rewote500, I don't intend to be rude and I am not doing this to insult you, but if you want to copy and paste links, you should also copy and paste Shell's answer to this question which they so graciously took the time to answer when they answered all the questions posted to them on the BITOG Q&A forum. Here is their answer for you to read again.

35. If Pennzoil Ultra™ is so good why does it have to be changed every four months or 4K miles in order to make a lubricant related warranty claim?

Regarding Pennzoil’s position on oil drain intervals, we standby the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. If the vehicle manufacturer recommends 3,000 miles or 15,000 miles for drain intervals, we are more than confident our products will excel as long as the Pennzoil® oil selected meets the requirements outlined in the owner’s manual.

Given the variety of oil drain interval recommendations from vehicle manufacturers including custom intervals set by oil life indicators, Pennzoil chose 4,000 miles as a single data point to apply to all participants.

Very True and a good point. I wonder how this would play out if you followed the 4K OCI after the manufacturers warranty expired. Perhaps I should email them.....
