Hey everyone, as of now my commute is down to about a mile one way. It will stay this way till around June. Then my commute will be back to 30 miles one way. Anyways due to my extremely short commute, I've been running QSUD 0W-20 for the past month. I warm it up for a minute, and then back out of my garage (which is generally 20 degrees warmer than outside), this past week has been cold as [censored] and the car never reaches operating temperature once I reach my destination. I still take a good long drive on the weekend (30 miles), and once a month go to Philly (140 mile roundtrip). Is that enough to burn off fuel dilution? I've never had a commute this short, it's generally been an 80 mile commute for the past 11 years, but just changed jobs and went to a 30 mile commute. Now, it's less than a mile, but not for long only a few months.

How long should I run this oil? Also, engine is extremely clean and has no sludge, so no need to take that into account in terms of how long to run the oil.

I usually take 2,000 mile road trips but I don't have another one planned till July (lot's of work right now, no time for a trip) so I won't be burning off any fuel dilution for a while and that trip is going to be close to 3,200 miles so no way I'm keeping the QSUD in the sump for that long. After June, I plan to switch back to PP 5w30.

P.S. for those that don't want to read the whole thing, my questions are italicized.

So, I should be fine if I keep the oil in the sump till June then. I won't have to ever deal with a commute this short after that.

Thanks!

Adds hair to your chest, lol.

If I had only a mile to work, I'd walk it.
Proper outerwear makes cold temps no problem and a mile or so in New Jersey in winter isn't exactly a trek through the arctic tundra.
The car won't make any heat in that distance anyway.
I sometimes wish I had a shorter commute with the option of walking.
One could walk 3-4 miles if he wanted to, but I have to travel twenty five each way.

I actually do get heat by the time I reach, remember my garage is much warmer than outside. Plus, I have heat seaters, which are warm by the time I leave my street.

Guys, this thread is about how long I could/should run the oil... Not whether or not I should walk to work. Also, walking is not an option when I have to carry around a few computers from and to work, which happens quite a lot.

Oh! computers...why didn't you say that before. J/K

Follow OEM recommendations. Probably 12 months.

+1

me too.

I ride my bicycle sometimes, it's about 3.7 miles. Nice ride in the wintertime, not so much in the summertime due to high Texas temps.

Usually the people saying "just bike it" are from California. They have never experienced waves of slush from passing cars.

A handful of one mile trips between full warm-ups won't be a problem. It depends on the car how long the engine oil takes to dry out. The oil itself will dry in only a few minutes when it gets up to temperature. But with some designs remote surfaces such as valve covers are exposed to cold air flows and will condense the moisture before it can be removed by the crankcase ventilation system.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

I'm going to run this oil out till June, which will be the end of this commute. I'm going to Philly this weekend as it turns out so I should be able to burn off anything in the oil.

So? I run/walk nearly every morning. 10 degrees isn't even chilly.

Did you guys not think that this could just be a bragging thread? I mean it almost sounds like "my supermodel wife tires me out by constantly wanting to do you know what" type of thread that we get here :-)
