2024 tacoma oil service question

Have you ever been so poor you have to use the same bath water after your siblings? Those days are over! Spend the $5 on a new filter. My elderly father short trips and when I change his oil the filter reeks of fuel. The least amount of contaminants in the new oil the better imo.

If you buy your filters on sale or at Rock Auto, NAPA has their brand oil on sale frequently. The cost won't be bad at all. I use Delco filters and NAPA oil on my Caddy and change every 3-3,500 miles because of thin oil + direct injection and turbo.

OP should stick with OE filters especially if he’s under warranty still

It for sure helps alot. The less a vehicle is driven, the more issues it will have down the road. I usually recommend people drive their vehicle on the highway for atleast an hour once a month to keep everything exercised.

I think technically to be considered not a short trip by most manufactures, a vehicle should be driven for atleast 15mins past it reaching operating temperature
Yeah but is it worth it to add a long weekend highway drive to the things you need to do? Plus the expense of the gas. Who has time for a long weekly highway drive to add to their schedule?

A lot of people can easily do that just by going a little bit further in their errands. If you’re planning on going to Walmart for instance, just choose to go to one that’s a little bit further

Yeah that's a good point. Can just try to loop it into a trip or an errand you're already running.

Are you trying to say that the used filter will dump its filtered particles into the new oil? Nah, I don't buy that. Some OEMs in the past recommended filter change every other oil change

Nope, I didn’t say that, quit reading into it.
I’m saying it’s just a stupid idea.

I believe all OEM's recommended changing the filter every other oil change... however that is in the past.

Arguably I feel like the filter is the important part of the oil change, I am not an expert though.

Unless you're driving a diesel, filters are cheap enough that they should be changed with every oil change and if you're driving a diesel, thats the cost of ownership unfortunately too and they should be changed with every oil change still

We pack kids and go often to eat 90mls up north to one of our favorite restaurants. We would often go with my wife's Tiguan as that vehicle mostly sees grocery shops, and racks up maybe 4-5,000mls a year.
If we go to some outlet etc. I would make sure I go with Tiguan.
Now that third kid is here, Tiguan is bit small, but if I need to go somewhere out of town for a quick meeting, I take Tiguan to give it some run.
Unless one is doing 3 jobs, 2 of them being in the service industry, everyone has time, or they set up their priorities wrong, on what they do during the weekend.

Engine wear is greatest during warmup and with such short trips pretty much all your trips are short. Frequent oil changes will help, but not eliminate this issue. What will help the most is to drive gently while the engine is cold to keep cylinder pressure low. Avoid lugging the engine, too.

Yes I can see how you can work it into your daily life if you think and try. I was more referring to someone just taking their car out for a 40 mile drive for no reason every weekend.

My vehicles are tools. My priority is making sure my tools work for me, and I don't work for them. My weekends are for hobbies.

Vehicles are tools for everyone.
But, sometimes you take a tool to get somewhere further away.
However, I can find a reason to take a tool for a longer trip. You find a good bar with nice scenery 40mls away, turn off the phone, drive it there, have a beer, and go back.

While touota care just use a vacuum pump and remove the oil and add fresh at 5 l letting them do the filter change. After that use a premium filter and continue the pattern. Use a good oil, it won’t make a ton of difference. In all likelihood your use pattern will change before you are done owning the truck.

Sounds like a nice outing. I bet you have some really good options in the CO Springs area!
