Most people don't. Additive clash is a rather..um..local concern.

Most people worry about bills, health, relationships, global warming, trivial stuff like that.

This ^^^

We did that all the time when I was working lube bay. The customer wants out now. The boss wants it done asap. So you pour the bottle and when it quits flowing quickly, you grab another. It all goes upside down into a gallon jug (qt necks fit nicely) one at a time for however long you are working on something else. By the end of the week, you have a goodly amount. It's also all top quality oil.

The mix idea is just the same as if you were on the road and had to top up... You'd mix brands too... It's not like you are lubing a race motor turning 8K and running hot. these are mild street motors. They are very tolerant of oil mixing. Home made syn-blend

What additives clash?

Same, that's how it was done with the taxis. That's why I get annoyed with friends who want my help to change oil and then expect me to sit there for 15 minutes waiting for the last sixteenth of an ounce to dribble out of a bottle, like it means anything in the grand scheme of things to oil volume or TBN retention, neither of which they understand in the first place.

Agreed!
I don't have the patience to wait for the last quarter ounce to dribble out of a bottle.
Five quarts dumped in and we're done.
The couple of ounces of fresh oil that go in the recycling bin in the emptied oil bottles are of no real concern.

Exactly. I'll let it drip a bit if I have time or am doing something else, but that assumed I have a funnel that'll allow that, which usually isn't the case. It's just not worth the effort.

I think I will leave my oil bottle upside down in the oil filler cap from now on.

My oil change takes 1 hour. I suspect it will take me 1.5 hours now, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

There are a couple things wrong with this statement.

1) You need to check with your recycling if they accept bottles that have contained motor oil. The vast majority do not and will ask you to throw out the bottle in the trash and not include it in recycling. While you may have good intentions, oil residue will actually ruin an entire batch of recycling, So if they don't catch it in sorting or the drips fall during transport, you just wasted a batch of resources.

2) If the bottles goes into the trash, the extra drops should be of concern. You should drain to get as many drops out if you care.
I personally do drain my empties. I set up a funnel to another bottle. I set up a bottle each day, and my 5 bottles are done in 5days.
However, I have no need for the 2ounces recovered, so I just dump the mixture in with the used oil (I also setup my filter to drain for at least a day in the setup to reduce drippage before sent for recycling.

1. Since nobody has any idea what any container might have had put in it by the user before it was disposed of, it makes no difference. Note that oil bottles do indeed have recycling symbols on their bottoms.

2. Unused motor oil is of very low toxicity. Common household products like detergents are far more hazardous environmentally.

Yeah, there are microbes that specifically like to eat oil. Motor, cooking, synthetic, crude, etc.

Not so many that munch on bleach or drain cleaner.
