Shoot out in my back yard

Economics is the name of the game, not gun control.

Wisdom is alive a well. Make lowlifes ..allow a "low life" as the likely limit of your economic ascent ..and you will have crime. Why anyone expects civil obedience in the midst of increasing poverty in full view of ever increasing luxury .. is way beyond my comprehension.

Look forward to much more of that type of situation. If you can manage to keep your economic edge, you may be able to just move/buy your way out of it ..but don't count on it.

This kind of thing could happen anywhere. Thats why I would never live in a state that will not give a CWL (Illinois). But I think you can still protect your home.

Care to explain why every state that's passed concealed carry laws has experienced a drop in violent crime? Do you suppose those fellows the cops were shooting at had their carry permits?

Bob

I think you misunderstood his point...he saying he would not live anywhere that does NOT allow CWL

Live Free or Die in good old NH!

Please read my post word for word.

I lived just outside Chicago in Calumet City. Unfortunately, I saw a quiet neighborhood turn into one that wasn't trustworthy in about 15 years.

Example1: A stray bullet almost killed my aunt as we were having dinner in our house. THAT was a fun night.

10pm one night, my dad & I were outside on the front porch and saw a Cuba Gooding Junior look-a-like demand payment from one of his 'friends' across the street from where we lived. Yelling and screaming his 'friend' just got into his car and ignored him. The Cuba clone mounted the hood, the car backed up, then gunned it to about 70mph down the road. The Cuba dude was screaming like a baby.

I told my dad, "what comes up, must come down". A few minutes later, you hear that car cranking down the road coming back our way. His 'friend' stopped on a dime, and turned his car into the previous spot it occupied...albeit at about 30mph. Cuba flew off the hood.

Same time, one week later, we noticed an old Chevy going VERY slowly the wrong way down a one way street. It was the same Chevy that was in front of me (going the proper direction) when I returned home from my fiance's home. Some 15 minutes later we heard gunfire. Three or four times. Not 3 minutes later a SWARM of cops cornered those two dudes directly in front of our house on the corner. They all drew their weapons and the two duded reluctantly got out of their car. I think we counted 14 cop cars. It was the closest thing to a scene in a movie..the lights, the dust, the drama, the realism...all about 150 feet from us.

January 1st, 1996, 3:12am. I get home from a New Year's eve celebration at 3am. I retire to bed only to notice the folks in the apartments across the street were still partying with GUNS and freely 'aiming' at targets. They shot a couple rounds in the air, which got me concerned. Looking out my bedroom window (they couldn't see me as I was in the interior of the dark room) they 'aimed' directly at my window. I freaked out. One "oops" on the trigger and I'm hauled off in a body bag. 3:12am. It's been permanently etched on my mind.

I miss the friends I had in Cal City, we've all moved on. Some great memories! But I don't miss Calumet City.

I'm sick of the whole system.
If they are caught in the act they should be a man and take
the punishment.
Sorry ,but Im getting to the point of Dirty Harry.
Its all about lawyers, guns and money.
I had punks kick in my back door.
cops showed up 25 minutes later.
A neighbor gave them a plate number and car make and color.
They could care less.
I guess the adreniline doesn't pump if bullets aren't flying.
I hope we can save our society before it is too late.

Watching the report of the shootout on the local news, none of the TV stations that carried the story got all of the details right. Some even had the wrong store being robbed. Makes me wonder how accurate the rest of their reporting is!

BINGO!!! I've been saying this since I was 16 years old!!! Our press is taken as gospel on so many issues and so many times they are 180° wrong.

As for my aunt, well it was Buena Park, Calif. The juvies were caught, and not even deported nor served any jail time. Here illegally, they walked (for that reason), and people wonder why I'm opposed to amnesty.

Just today a story showed up at ThisIsBroken.com that illustrates your point:

Hey apology fully accepted and no worries! I just did not want to be branded someone that is for strict gun laws or someone that does not realize the importance of us (the people) being allowed to own guns. There was a Penn and Teller video about all that which was great! I don't know if I can post it on here or not? If I still even have it. But anyway thanks for writing back.

During the LA riots elements of the 1st Marine Divison at Pendleton were called in for support, and in responding to a shots fired call a local officer asked that some Marines accompany him. They located the house, and when the local officer asked the Marines to cover him, they did, they opened up on the house; 'cover me' means something different to Marines :^) The perp surrendered immediately.

Perps shooting at rescue personnel in New Orleans after Katrina indicate that snipers need to accompany the Red Cross these days.

On the other side of the issue, gun makers make guns, gun makers sell guns, and then people sell guns. Gang bangers don't use zip guns. A few years back at the gun shows in Portland gang bangers openly attended the shows and bought weapons, before they started doing background checks. Years back when Boston put togther a large program to deal with gang shootings they found that most of the guns were coming from dealers in the south.

That is posted on You tube or one of those sites. I saw it a couple of weeks ago. VERY good.

Something to ponder. If one were to successfully ban guns from this country, what would make one think they would not be able to import them? Thousands of tons of drugs and other contraband (including people) cross the border into this country every year. It would just be another black market.

My comment on gun control has obviously poked a few here. I'm not for banning guns completely, I'm for strict laws to obtain them legally. You can own any gun you want in Canada, but you have to jump through hoops, background checks, waiting periods, and even be a member of a 'gun/shooting club'. That doesn't mean that someone won't go through those hoops and then lose their marbles, like that clown at Dawson College in Montreal last year. We were highly affected by that. Nothing would have changed that incident had I owned a combination of 20 rifles and handguns in my arsenal.. nothing. Again, my gun control opinion applies to Canada only where things haven't deterioted that bad... yet.

Law abiding citizens, with a good track record, signed off by their doctor, dentist, and close friends including a 3 month waiting period and a comprehensive background check by Provincial (aka State) and municipal police goes a long way in this country, and yes the economy is much much different. We are a much more socialistic country then the USA, which might explain more (about our gun crime levels) then our strict gun control laws. Maybe a combination of the two is the way to go?

Being that what it may, if I lived in the states I would want to live in a state that allows me to carry a concealed weapon. Big time contradiction?? Absolutely, but when in Rome....

Tell me why do you all put up with this??

The price of individual freedom can be high. Freedom is NOT free.

There are a lot of 'just as free' if not 'more free' countries with less gun crime... Canada being one of them. So I don't believe you need guns for freedom, unless that freedom is consistently being threatened by guns. It's the whole chicken/egg thing.. what comes first? The guns, or the crime?

It would help too if popular culture in the USA didn't glorify gang life with million dollar selling records to the masses.

In toronto the Peel regional police just took down a whole network of gangs in the Jane Finch area. We need more of that, and less apathy by police forces who think it's hopeless to try.
dunno.gif

That's just silly. And you think the illegal aliens with guns will buy them legally? Register and sit out the waiting period? That is too funny. No, USA does NOT have a gun problem. We have a law enforcement problem. No one wants to get serious because they will offend the ethnics......or offend the free loaders pouring over our borders.

The PEOPLE spoke loud and clear yesterday. WE don't need a stinking amnesty law, we need our borders enforced. Then we go after criminals.

I would NOT live a land which restricts my freedom. Shannow spoke the truth about gun control.... if you own a gun in Aus, you have surrendered more than one right.

Ok, the USA has a law enforcement problem you say, and this problem has nothing to do with guns? How can I possibly argue with that

Have any of you heard of:

1. illegal wire tapping by the leaders of your country
2. free speech suppression through the patriot act's I and II
3. sending men and women into harms way based on lies to the people.
4. corporate fraud that has cost billions to regular people and rocked the energy sector to it's core.
5. etc, etc

I know 4 hours a day of cnn is good and all, but there's more to reality if you dig a little deeper.

Our parliament ('like' your congress) has to debate newly implemented restrictive USA laws regularly with respect to how they will affect the privacy of our citizens. A perfect example is the new 'no fly list' that all airlines flying through USA air space must comply with. Your government will now have a list of every person, regardless of nationality, that flies through your air space, even if it never touches down in the USA. Example, flight from Montreal to Vancouver skims the 49th parallel, and your leaders get details of every person on that plane. Funny how they call it a 'no fly list', when it should be called a 'all-fly-list'. Double speak? 1984 anyone?

There are more laws in the USA that restrict your real freedom then you realize, while propaganda that gives you the illusion of being the only 'free' country in the world.

I'd live in Oz and wouldn't think twice about it. I'm actually considering spending winter there.. these canadian winters are killing me. I've had half a dozen job offers in the USA (all for more money) and have turned every one of them down for many of the reasons I listed above. Maybe my reality is skewed, but I don't think so and your crime stats back me up. We can argue all day about the cause of the high gun crime rate, whether economic, cultural, social, etc. The reality is there IS a problem, and it is NOT getting better. Logic tells me more guns won't make it better either. And don't get me started on your media... every media outlet using Paris Hilton's ridiculous jail time as their 'main' story for a few weeks doesn't do much for the social fabric of your country. Ok, now that I've peeved off the majority on this board, I apologize... I don't know why I'm so passionate about affairs in another country.. maybe because it's soo close to home

I don't have the answers, just opinions

Gun/violent crime is directly related fathers not being in their home and actually fathering their own kids. Those kids want a sense of belonging that their father is not instilling into them, yet the gang offers that for them. The rest is academic. And society pays DEARLY.

It's truly a sad sight to behold.
