Shingles

Had shingles last year that broke out on my hip, painful blistering. used Salonpas cream for the pain, just have to let it run it's course. :(

Hey Eddie. As you have seen from these posts do not play with this. If you are not better than you were before seek additional medical treatment immediately. You don't want to lose an eye or have permanent nerve damage.

And here I thought the OP was talking about dollar bills. Father had shingles at one time when living. I got the shot when I turned 65 so hoping to avoid them. At the time of my shot there was just one shot. Hopefully that is enough
Did you get Zostavax? That was the single shot shingles vaccine. Now they recommend you get Shingrix even if you had Zostavax before as Shingrix is better than Zostavax. I think Zostavax was about 51% effective and Shingrix was 91-97% depending on age.

Oh yeah, as for my co-worker, he basically went blind in that eye. The eyeball died and it ended up shriveling up until it was just an empty socket. He did end up getting a prosthetic to fill in the eye socket.

I received my first dose of Shingrix last Friday and I was quite sick for two days after. But I'm still glad I got the shot, this thread is further confirmation I did the right thing. I'll get the second shot in 4-5 months, and remember this thread when I'm sick again.
For those who have already had Shingles, the Shingrix vaccine can prevent a reoccurrence. Ask your doctor.

It depends, everyone is different
My father had shingles and it lasted some time (weeks)

My recommendation is to buy some black garlic capsules and cut back on bread and dairy for a while, just like you might with a cold

Good Luck, it’s never fun.
Black garlic? I would also pull the needle out of my voodoo doll.

If it's near the eye, a doctor's visit should be done.

No kidding. Bread, dairy, black garlic and insulin control will prevent a virus?

I went out and got the vaccination after I saw the heck my wife and a coworker went through with shingles. No thanks.

Wife had shingles three years ago still having nerve pain couple times a month. Nerver we t to her face lect shoulder and center of back. She even had the shot a year before.
You say she had "the shot" ...
Do you know what vaccine she got?

There is the newer two shot vaccine, Shingrix which is 90 to 97% effective (depending on age)
The older one shot Vaccine, Zostavax is only 51% effective.

Controlling insulin is the key to preventing shingles? Please. Just stop.

Who said not to visit a doctor? I would assume that was the first thing the op did before asking in a motor oil forum.

Black or aged garlic helps with skin breakouts just as the real stuff does from a grocery store as does l-lysine .
I recommended black garlic because I doubt the op is going to munch on garlic cloves. He would take this in addition to whatever the doc gives him.

Dude, Diabetes needs to be under control to reduce runaway infections including shingles.

Yes that is a thing, high blood sugar damages immunity,
Any doctor can list the mile long list of problems from high blood sugar, which includes most skin problems.
When my father was diagnosed with diabetes that developed during a major surgery
shortly after he got thrush which turned into Shingles, the doctor was far more concerned with my fathers blood sugar than the shingles and said his diabetes needed to be under control before the shingles treatment would be effective.
Because of how insulin resistant my father was he had a strict low carb / low calorie meal plan from the doctor back in the 80’s in addition to both pills and insulin which weren’t enough by themselves.
So it’s not like this is something new.

So Definitely not a good idea to eat ho hos and health bars while you have an active shingles infection, unless you enjoy a longer infection followed by thrush and breakouts.

Hi Carb diet with a shingles infection is a bad idea as it’s not a healthy diet and is associated with an increase in skin problems anyway.
L-lysine and basically the type of food you eat during a cold are best, think chicken soup, but with plenty of veggies.

Milk products cause mild inflammation in most people, in my case I develop asthma followed by impetigo when I consume milk products for extended periods due to autoimmune issues with milk and bread.
Doc says no milk or bread for me as I am intolerant to many components in both.
Unfortunately for me I have to take l-lysine for the rest of my life, I develop mouth/lip sores followed by facial sores when I miss a few days.

I'm still a bit confused as to how "skin breakouts" and thrush is connected to shingles, but maybe that's just me. If chicken soup, black garlic and avoiding milk helps you to prevent a virus then that's great.

post #17 is the more typical.
It is a reoccuring visit even when treated.
Consult doc to see if the vac can do a one time knock out punch (no reoccuring).
The eye is a lill different (than in our family) so U may
what doc (ur primary care physician) to make referral so insurance covers it...HTH
Good Luck.

I had shingles in 2019 in the same area as the OP. I had daily visits with my optomologist for about 2 weeks to insure the infection didn't enter the eye.

About a week after the rash subsided I developed an intense sensitivity to light that lasted about 6 weeks. At its worst, sitting in my windowless office at work with the lights out and sunglasses on, the only light coming from my computer monitor was still painful. The overnight the sensitivity stopped.

I wouldn't wish shingles on my worst enemy.
You got that right big B. I developed shingles around my right waist twenty three years ago and have been in pain ever since. I have PHN attacks so painful that I am completely incapacitated. Monday I had an attack that was so severe that it made me so nauseous that I couldn't stop retching. This went on for ten hours. Wife finally called 911 and EMT gave me 5 micrograms of fentanyl, which stopped the pain very fast. He also gave me something for nausea before transporting to our emergency room. So here is the conundrum. I have not found a doctor who will prescribe Rx for fentanyl patches. My last pain specialist told me in December of 2019 that there was nothing he could no longer do for me and ask my GP is she would continuing Rx for hydrocodone. She did, but twenty milligrams no longer helped and I discontinued taking it. Her eyeballs cage and roll around in her head if I mention fentanyl. Scared to death of the DEA. It seems one has to be dying of cancer to be prescribed fentanyl. If I have another attack, the only way I am going to get help is call 911. Here is the best advice one will ever hear. Get the shingles vaccination as soon as you can. You don't want to chance being the one in twenty left with PHN.

I have had eczema all my life so the thought of developing shingles terrifies me. I got both of my Shingrix vaccines when I turned 64 with zero side effects. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I am among the 90-97% effective group.

You will be OK Dwight. Keep on keeping. Regards

We had no side effects from the 2-dose Shingrex vaccine.

For no reason other than simplicity I'd sign on for whatever low carb/sugar/dairy diet anyone suggested during such a hideous trial.

I'd believe in removing pollutants from my system as well. This'd include booze and tobacco. Why? no idea beyond the belief that cleanliness will help my body do what it can. If you dismiss that as, "hippie", you're the one who's stoned.

Childish, you say? Ask me if I care. ...but yes, I would consult a medical nutritionist's opinion. They must have generalized guidelines to reducing internal impediments (damage) caused by bad food choices.

I believe in doctors, pharmacology, good diet, physical maintenance. And since diabetes effects every system in the body, I gotta go with controlling diabetes being a good thing to do at all times.

Wife's poor Aunt got shingles on the brain. Just thinking about that gives me the willies.

I had the first dose of the shingles vaccine. It made me really sick. Heard the second dose is worse. Don't know if I'll get it. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.
First dose knocked me down a bit too. No issues with the second thankfully. I was grateful to be able to get this vax given how horrible shingles is. I've psoriasis pretty bad on my right arm and sometimes right leg. That's bad enough.
