I've decided it's time to replace my 14 year old Simmons mattress. Anyone have any experience with Shiffman Mattresses?

Yes, they are an old company that still makes mattresses the old fashioned way--by hand. The closest Shifman dealer to me is up in Charlotte.

If you don't have your heart set on a particulart brand Sears Outlet has some pretty good deals.
I went there thinking I would find a decent returned or discontinued item and instead came away with a brand new Simmons set at a hefty discount.

After sleeping on a thick memory foam mattress topper at my parents' home, I'm pretty sure that a memory foam mattress will be our next.

We had a Tempur-Pedic for 3 years. It was very comfortable, but we woke up every night in a puddle of sweat no matter how cold the room was. That memory foam just doesn't breath and is very hot. Went back to a regular mattress with a thick memory foam topper and it seems to be better.
Whew lots a money. Here in NC the go to place is Original mattress factory. Best price best quality. I have bought 6 sets from them.

You can't go by Bloomingdale's online prices, although the top of the line Shifman's (loaded with wool, cashmere, silk, etc) are very expensive.
Shifman mattresses are priced like other "fine" furniture, i.e., you can figure on 50% to 70% off the list price being the "out the door" price. I fully expect to pay about $1600 for a set that "retails" for a little over $4000. This puts the "out the door" price right in line with the "out the door" prices of the high-end Sealy, S&F, and Simmons mattresses.
