I was reading that shellac is the right stuff to use on paper gaskets. Is this still the case? I know my Autozone sells small bottles of Permatex Indian Head Shellac.

I believe the right method is to shellac the gasket, both sides, let it dry, and then install. Correct?

Ive never done this to paper gaskets on things like oil pans, but perhaps I am using incorrect technique as a result.

Thanks!

The instructions also say to apply the shellac to the mating surfaces (for a total of four surfaces).

One of my manufacturer service manuals (I think it was a GM) suggests using TFE paste on paper gaskets in cooling systems. I had never heard of that one, but I gave it a try on the water outlet of my 318 Dodge. Worked great.

Gaskacinch is the best in my opinion. It is a contact cement, not shellac. When used properly it prevents the gasket from slipping (which is why you never use RTV on paper gaskets).
