Shell Rotella 10w30 synthetic blend

Hello there and while up in Punxsutawney on easter weekend, my dad asked me what I was using for oil in my car, and I told him 5w20, and he for some reason said I should try Rotella 10w30 synthetic blend. Went to wal mart and it was on sale for $12 for a 5qt jug. Thought bout picking up some, but thought I would ask you folks. I do have a friend with I believe a 2000 accord with over 210k on his and he is currently using this oil without any problems, and he goes 5500-6000 miles for a oil change using the stuff.


thank you in advance and any help finding a voa or uoa or advantage and or disadvantage to me using this is greatly appreciated.

Did he care to explain why he thought you should use that particular oil?

What car/engine is this for? What does the owner's manual recommend? You should start there.

All in all, Rotella is a diesel oil, not energy conserving, so you may sacrifice some MPG and gain practically nothing.. hard to tell.

Ditto to Pete's questions. Also be careful, the Rotellas (and diesel oils in general) are usually in 1 gallon / 4qt containers, not 5qts like the rest of the auto oils.

I agree, way too heavy an oil for your Honda particularly on start-up.
Stick with the recommended 20wt oil grade.

Yeah, he is a older man; 61 yrs old and kinda stuck on that thing to use something thinner than 5w20. I actually went back to the WAL MART this morning before heading home, got some mobil super 5000 for $11.50 for a 5qt jug. Wal Mart there had a ton of the rotella syn blend 10w30 in 5qt jugs also and I saw it is diesel and gasoline rated as had SN rating on it also. I agree I think its a little too thick for a d17a1 1.7l 4cyl engine which my honda has.

The 10w30 won't hurt and probably won't help. The higher level of additives in the diesel engine oil may cause your catalytic converter to die sooner than otherwise.

Oil viscosity is part engineering and part custom. Valvoline's Australian web site is interesting dealing with the habits of their customers there. For the 1.7L Civic, they recommend their 10W-40 oil. It all works.

As was mentioned earlier, Rotella comes in 4qt (1gal) jugs, not 5qt.

Thanks ken and pete! I must not have paid much attention to that also, so thank you guys for correcting me. Anyone here have a voa or even a used oil analysis after use in a gas engine?

Funny, that it was cheaper than the completely stocked end sections of 5qt jugs of Valvoline NexGen in 5w20 and 5w30 for $16.57 at that wal mart location.
