Shannow's a drooling idiot

hmmm, nearly bedtime on end of day four, and lower left lip half has the trembles...strange...raises right Spock eye

A co-worker of mine a few years back had this happen to him out of no where as well. He fully recovered and you could never tell that it had occurred.

I hope you have a full recovery as well.

Wow, hope you have a rapid recovery.

Don't want you to go ANYWHERE that wouldn't let you post right here on BITOG.

I would have been scared to death before I found out the real diagnosis because it seems to mimic a stroke or TIA.

Shannow, get well soon. Only time will heal this. I had Bell's....twice.

First the right side of my face. Started off with a headache with the pain in the back and side of the head. Few days later like you, I felt something wasn't right and looked in the mirror. The drooling idiot was staring back at me.....droopy face, partial paralysis.

Just to make sure I wasn't having a stroke, I grabbed a pen and paper and started writing my name. OK there. Doctor put me on Prednisone and told me that basically I'd have to wait it out.

Took months for my face to start to return to its ugly self. It was kind of fun smiling at little kids and watching them run away.

For the most part my normal ugliness has returned. I still have a slightly droopy smile on the right side. When I look down my right eye closes. I'm lucky that it hasn't effected the nerves that close the eyes.

Four or five years later that same headache came back. This time on the left side of my head. This time the droopies weren't very severe nor did the droopyness remain and I recovered pretty quickly.

I often wondered what trauma to my facial nerve(s) caused this. I do recall that months prior to getting it on the right side I had been to the dentist. The doc and I had a terrible time getting my lower jaw on that side to get numb. Took several stabs of different kinds of "Novocaine" in the back corner of the jaw to do it.

Also, during 2/3 of the year, I'm usually driving with the A/C on aimed on the right side of my face. My wife would always tell me how cold my face was when I'd get my welcome home hug and kiss.

paulo, thanks for your history.

Twice is pretty unlucky, although the quack said that there's a 1:10 chance of recurrence (in either the original or the other side)...I would imagine the poor people who get both sides concurrently would be in a very very dark place

18 days in, and I am way way improved.

Prednisone was one of the worst things that I've ever taken, didn't complete the routine, as I felt like I'd been hit by a bus, and was craving carbs, which is weird for me. Have been ridiculously photo-sensitive since taking them, getting burned in 15 minutes, even two weeks later.

At work Wednesday, I found myself whistling. Not well, but there was enough control to whistle. Workmates noticed that both eyes were behaving as a team during blinking.

Had a week of excruciating nerve pain (could map them out following the pain lines) as everything started to reboot. An aspiring 4 times a day provided considerable relief...and being anti-inflamatory was probably helpful.

Ate 3.5 whole garlics, raw, clove by clove over the course of a week (anti-viral), and beetroot juice every morning (we are growing them)...

Still a ways to go, with toothpaste and rinse/spit, but if recovery stopped today, I'd be comfortable.

Turmeric, boswellia, and other herbs have a proven history of reducing inflammatory responses in some folks.

Good to hear you are doing well...

Year down, and still a few lingering issues.

Whistling is still a pleasure, little bit of lack of control on the left side when drinking from a cup or bottle, meaning the occasional drip.

Lot less wrinkles on the affected side, and the only thing that really really miffs me is that side won't squint when walking towards the sun...nervous system over-reacts and closes down the good side even further, meaning that I'm blinded by glare LHS, and by eye nearly shut RHS.

Pretty happy, will call it 95% right, and that's good.

Waking up with an ear-ache really really scares me now.

Awake on and off through the night with an ear ache ('tis the season)...Woke up this morning feeling like I'd had a dental visit. While brushing teeth in shower realised something was definitely not right, rinse and spit had no actual meaning, and I realised that I wasn't holding the brush to my teeth with my cheek (think about it a bit).

Anyway, a GP visit (an hour), off to the ER (my BP had them worried...white coat syndrome, my newly developed symptom, a sealed letter to the ER doctors, and a "go there now" had ME worried 50/20 points worth it seems, as that's what got wiped off as the ER doctor told me what was actually going on...

Bell's Palsy is the diagnosis, and time, and a week on 'roids is apparently the fix.

So anyway, I'm a drooling Shannow at the present point in time, regularly dropping PVA into my eye, and having to tape one shut at around 10-11PM, and keep it that way (at least while I sleep)...

My Sister suffered an episode of BP quite a few years ago. One whole side of her face was paralyzed. I think it was her left side? She had to tape her eye lid closed and sleep with an eye patch because she couldn't close the eye as you are experiencing. Scared the bejesus out of her and our family when it happened

The good news is she recovered about 95%+ from it within a couple months. About the only really noticeable and lingering results from it is her eye lid is a little droopy. Not much but a little. Hopefully you will recover fully and be ok going forward. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

EDIT - didn't realize this was an old thread you were updating. Glad to hear you are doing well.

I didn't read any of the 6 pages. So I'm apologising now. I just got over a bout with Bell's Palsy. Unassisted, it will gradually go away in a week. I discovered it when I couldn't spit out after brushing one morning. It happened to a friend of mine once. My face resembled his. One side of my face went limp.

Very glad to hear it's nothing on the serious side.

And I love your sense of humor in the midst of it all...equating a UOA to the additives.

Prednisone 75mg a morning for 7 days.
Apparently a UOA would show this at 2500% of normal values.

PVA Forte eye moistening drops
20ppm PolyVinyl Alcohol
0.05ppm benzalkonium chloride.

Poly Visc to smear in eye before sleep (and taped over).
I liked the name, but got a laugh out of the ingredients.
Paraffin and wool fat (undosclosed ration, must be proprietary), possible autoRx substitute >

Shannow, wishing you a speedy and complete recovery to full vigor!

Hey met a lovely couple visiting from Beenleigh Queensland Australia today at our Rotary meeting.
Thought to myself I know a BITOG gent from ‘a prisoner island.’
