"SH" Mobil 1 10w-30???

I found six quarts of SH rated Mobil 1 10w30 while cleaning up the basement. I figure the oil is about 10+ years old or so. Think it's OK to use? Bottles are were sealed and the oil looks/smells ok. Probably would go into a 3.0 Duratec V6.

I'm just finishing the last liter of Castrol 5W-50 SH Syntec from a case that I bought sometime in the 90's. I use it to thicken up the 5w30's a little I use in my Jetta during the summer months.

Since it's synthetic I would have no problem using it. Just blend it a quart or 2 a time with whatever other oil you use for your current oil changes if you don't want to use it all at once.

I'd throw it away.

SH is very old and I would not risk it. I have used oil that was 7-8 years old but at least 10 is quite a bit longer.

SH oils are to be used in 1996 and before engines. SJ is for 2001 and SL was 2004. SM since Nov 30th 2004.

I'd toss it. Not worth the risk. Syn or not.

use it in lawnmowers or snowblowers or something, also check if its separated (be stick gunk in bottom) if its separated throw it out

I'd use it next summer. I feel the oil is still fine but if anything the PPD may have degraded a bit. I had an excellent UOA with SH rated Valvoline full synthetic last year. I also feel that SH rated Mobil 1 was probably better than the current version.

PS: If your gonna dump it I'll take it off your hands since I'm very close to NYC.

I'd call Mobil and ask their techs if it is okay to use in a vehicle spec'ed for SH.

I'd probably use it, but just because I hate throwing things away that can be used. I would not use it in any vehicle that is under warranty, and preferably only a vehicle that spec's SH oil. If you don't have anything that falls within those guidelines, then maybe a lawmower, although it would take years to use it up that way.

My offer to take it off your hands still stands Drew. I'd use it in my 02' Buick and do a used oil analysis to prove that oil isn't milk (it doesn't go bad)!

We might be able to settle the "how long is oil okay to store?" question for good.

Well, I changed the oil in my mower, snowblower, generator and leaf/branch chipper this weekend and used up most of it in them. Seemed to be a slight residue in the bottom of the bottles.

Should be fine for the small engines, but my car is only a year old and under warrenty, plus I have a pretty good stash of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20, so I erred on the side of caution.
