Severely sludged 2001 Avalon 3.0 and ARX-ideas?

I will be glad to send anyone interested a powerpoint presentation that was put together from my cameraphone pics. PM to me your email. These pics have captions on them so that he would know just what he was looking at and what it took to do this job. I do not want to publish these online since a friend was in some of the pics and asked me not to.

AS a follow-up to this thread, the car was totaled approx 3 weeks after I finished the job when my nephew pulled out in front of a pizza delivery F150 and got smashed up. Needless to say he called me and said he would not be able to pay the remaining 600 dollars he still owes me since he had no full coverage and had to go out and buy a new car. Then he had the cahunas to say that he did not want things to get weird between us because of money and that he values our "friendship". Did I mention that he goes to church every Sunday? I have not been to church in many years and have no intentions of doing so, if that's how a church man treats people, especially his own brother in law. I know there are plenty of good church folks out there, but this just really stinks.

I don't understand why you'd bother cleaning a severely sludged engine. The damage is already done and irreversible. The engine has probably suffered excessive wear.

Instead of wasting my time doing a tear down, I would install a remanufactured engine from a vendor like Jasper.

Well, how much longer is the engine going to last? Another 30k? No one knows.

He already spent $1500 + parts to "clean up" this thing. When the engine fails, he's going to spend nearly the same amount of money, if not more, on labor alone to R/R the engine again. In my opinion, he should've used that original $1500 towards the cost of a remanufactured engine.

My fault. I meant bmwtechguy would be out the extra money. Depending on how much he trusted the BIL that is.

The BIL didn't know how much it would cost until it was done, if I read it right. If I knew up front it would of cost that much, or at least got that as the estimated cost, I'd have to do some thinking. (Have it done, the remanufactured engine option, or a cheap beater car.)

I don't think bmwtg will see the money anytime soon, if at all.

Well, one of the main reasons I felt that the engine could be reconditioned by cleaning it up is that the engine was still very quiet and ran fine. My only question was going to be how much better the oil consumption would be without pulling the heads and replacing valve stem seals/guides, etc. We were on track to having a very nice result afterwards with no more cold startup smoke and no more noticeable consumption, and still the engine was quiet and powerful. Had we the chance to get the results of having Maxlife oil in the sump for a couple thousand miles, I think anyone would have had a hard time telling that this car ever had a problem. That's how good the final result was. I told him he should have no problem going another 100k miles on that engine.

Jasper Engines. All I can say is, "no thank you." Been there, done that. Just think, then he would have spent even more on the car before his son wrecked it. Plus he did not have that kind of money.

No, after not talking to me for a long, long time, all of a sudden when his car started having a major issue, he calls me and wants to be my new buddy, and I fell for it. I mean, we never get invited over to their house in the burbs 45 minutes away, and then out of the clear blue, we are over there several times in a couple of months. I bet they won't invite us over again now that I'm not needed. And that is fine. I like it better this way.

Bottom line is, he should have, and could have done way better oil service maintenance on this engine, and I offered to help with that when he bought it, telling him that the engines were known for the sludging issue, and he just said that he was taking it to Toyota for all service to keep his service record book current to help keep the value high. Ha ha. So much for that plan. I feel like an idiot for getting involved with him.

This is because you're still young enough that you still know it all. I suggest making your fortune NOW. As you age, you get less intelligent.

You also tend to get kids and a home ..payments. It's really all too complicated to handle as your IQ descends into the basement.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention a couple of other things. He took full coverage off this car when the smoking and all started, and when he was going to add his son as a driver. I guess this was to keep his insurance bill a tad lower. He had just finished paying Toyota of Greenville for brakes all the way around and for a full set of nice BFG tires from Costco just before I did the desludge, which I had a hard time understanding why he did that beforehand.

Also when he came to pick up the car, he literally was going to get in the car and drive away without offering any money or explanation. I stopped him and asked if he was going to pay the money he said he had and he then said he had forgotten his checkbook. But after I pressed him a bit, he came up with a couple of Ben Franklins from his wallet. A check did not arrive until 10 days later.

Probably figured that since he is family, sort of, you'd wait. And wait. And wait.....

Where I live, people come to me with their computer problems. Thanks to incidents like yours, I tell them $50/hr. Up front.

Amazing how they don't bother me with it any more.
