Seat Selection

SeatGuru.com can be very helpful. Like Wikipedia, it is peer reviewed, and a source of information on airline seating configurations.

Some seats may look attractive, until you see what people say about them on seat guru.

...

Seatguru is no more. It stopped being updated years ago, and tripadvisor who now owns the domain finally took it down after so many complaints about it being out of date.

What is the difference between business class and 1st?

They look the same from what I can tell

Depends on the aircraft. I've only flown business or 1st where it was basically just an airliner seat, but bigger. But there have been any number of different types of seating. Like United Polaris, which they consider business class.

Yeah … Right after booking - I go direct to the airline and move my seat if needed … after a few million miles - don’t need SeatBoo-Boo anymore 😷

Consider duration of the flight and your body size too as they will determine how much space you need; passengers seating next to you may play big role as well. Personally, I like sort of 'bracing' myself where I can rest my legs/knees against seat in front of me (without causing any inconvenience to the person in it). I consider flights within 3-4 hours airtime be 'easy', they get 'hard' when lasting over 7-8 hrs. Also, don't drink coffee/tea on the plane, only bottled beverages unless you wanna play lottery with your health.
If you collect miles with the airline and esp if you have status due to SQM/SQS and over 60 y.o. then you may ask for a curtesy upgrade to Business class. I was bumped to Buss once for free when flying to HI on B747, due to status with the airline, it was 1K with United.

We have a United CC and building points to help offset the price

Do not know what SQM/SQS is…Will google that & yes over 60 but under 65

First class is nice but if you dont enjoy flying you still won't enjoy it. I prefer to save my $$ and do something fun with it when we land. Unless its a nominal fee to upgrade. Im not paying 3-5x coach prices. I recently flew from Munich to San Diego, coach. I survived. MT to Hawaii is what 6hrs? That's not bad at all. Try flying domestic airlines in Mexico being over 6'. Talk about cramped!

SQM - status qualifying miles
SQS - status qualifying segments
Just check at check in when you drop luggage off if they can offer you an upgrade and your options. Then you can do same before boarding as there will be an agent at the gate.

The Boeing 737 is in use between the West Coast and HI. It is the narrowest of tubes (by about 7-8") and therefore has narrower seats by about an inch, in economy. Pick something else if you want a bit more wiggle room.

Otherwise the comments above stand. Long flights are much more pleasant in business or first.

I'm 5-10 so I fit in nearly all seats. Even so my shoulders are wide and overlap 737 seats every time. I try to cross my arms, but that gets tiring on long trips.

United (and perhaps other airlines) had flights between San Francisco International and Oakland International. All of 13 miles. It was (for United) SFO-OAK-DEN, but it was possible to book SFO-OAK alone. Supposedly a lot of bookings near the end of the year for status as an extremely quick run. It qualified as a single segment and 500 miles.

I’ve had multiple surgeries & nerve damage/pain where I can’t sit 2 hours max & need to get up walk

I’m 5’11 with broad shoulders with way to much extra padding

If thats the case, spring for the business or first ticket. 6 hours is a long time in a seat. As a larger guy (6’4” 230) that’s had back surgery and generally hates sitting still I can’t stress this enough.

They often allow purchasing miles at end of calendar year that can be qualifying miles, it may make a difference if you're close to next status level and/or planning on using miles for flights when need just few extra miles for that/those flights.

So just did Transatlantic in one of UA’s 777’s - Polaris 2A.
A youngster (maybe 10) and his dad boarded at the center bulkhead pair. The boy in 1D goes: “hey dad, does your seat have a microwave like mine?”
(It was the little cabinet with headset) 😷

I don't think it is a realistic expectation that you will be able to get up and walk around in a narrow body flight from CONUS to HNL.

From the time it takes for the narrow body to take off, gain cruising altitude, flight beverage service with a cart, likes for bathrooms, turbulence, etc-- the flight will be sold out and a can of packed sardines will have more elbow room than you will have in a economy seat, even exit row. Note I fly conus to hnl multiple times annually and often am in the exit row.

Two recommendations, if you must walk every two hours get a United flight typically out of SFO that is a wide body. Second recommendation is to pay whatever it costs to get an exit row. Finally, I can't say for United, but for American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, their is significantly more legroom on a narrow body exit row than narrow body first class.

I am typing this reply sitting on a flight waiting to take off that will be five hours..I just completed a fifteen hour nonstop flight from Dallas to Seoul.prior to the fifteen hour nonstop, I was on a two hour commuter flight. One needs the right mindset for long flights. Add winter delays, deicing, maintenance issues, and things can become even longer than published flight times.

Supplemental -- consider getting your reservations locked in early for Pearl Harbor tours.

Waiting for another UA Polaris flight - hard to turn down 4 Emirates A380’s - but at $2k more - doing my part to stay out of the cheap seats …
