If I can add my .02 worth here. As a very young man in 1970 I began my automotive experience helping a friend of the family rebuild his Ford 390. I was excited because I was the one who got to clean all the parts. We tore down the engine and I began to notice on the internal parts a very thick hard film on the lifters and such. I found out that he had been feeding the engine a steady diet of STP every oil change. Remember, back then it was 3000 or 3 months. Well the engine rebuilder told us we would not be able to use allot of the parts because of the tighter tolerances due to the film. I only saw one engine with this problem so I'm not saying all engines would suffer this problem. I only say this in case you are ever planning on an engine rebuild. Those parts add up quickly.

My one son has put STP in with 5w-30 winter and 10w 30 summer, in 1996 Dodge Stratus 2.4, against my advice. After 3 oil changes at 2500 miles (drives very few miles in town) with the STP, and with one solvent flush, his consumption has greatly diminished, the check engine light has not come on,the valve rattle is gone. Then when we pulled the valve cover this weekend, the top end was clean. I understand why it should not work, but based on anecdotal observation, it sounds like a ARX commercial. I am making no claims for STP, and the frequent oil changes or flush may have more to do with it than the additive, but the thing runs better now, than when he got it 4 years ago. I am not recommending the use of STP, and I do not use it in my engines. However, can it help in certain applications?

Now if we could cure the electrical gremlins dodge put in this car.......

Old STP is valued. It had very high concentrations of additives like zinc [compared to today's stuff].
