Sams club rant

I never had a club membership at BJ, Costco or Sam's.

For me it's really not worth the headaches, Publix has very similar prices on BOGO and regular $10 off any $50 gas cards.

Sams does a one day pass for anyone. Just ask. I buy a Sams membership when it's on sale. I lend the card for gas purchases to anyone who wants it.

Yes but they're setting a trap by excluding the date when they print the month of expiration.

For the annual fee delta divided by 365 days - I'd have paid and it's a never to happen again moment...
(We all have those)
Having tried both Sam's and Costco...the thrill is gone as I have developed a more site specific knack for shopping ...
Often here folks say I buy a battery at AZ since they are everywhere- me too ... so that was one of the decent buys I passed up.
Tires ? Love my DT store... Dollar General - I park 15' from door ... no wait at check out ... live in Texas? You might like HEB ...
Walmart is Walmart...
Big box cards will expire in 4 months.gone

Mine just expired a few days ago.

I got snail mails and emails.

I also happen to look at my card before i walk into the door.

IMHO you paid for a years membership, you got your year.

When you pay for parking, pay phones, or put money in the car wash you get what you pay for...nothing more nothing less.

Scam's frequently offers free trial memberships and HiCostco also does more rarely.
Did you insist on seeing a manager?
At some point, they probably would have let you slide just to avoid holding up the line on a busy shopping day.
Also, had they simply allowed you through with a friendly scolding, you'd probably be here praising their good customer service instead of lambasting them.
This is a classic example of an occasion where a retailer could have gained years of customer loyalty and instead created permanent customer hostility.
These chains that make you pay dues to shop always struck me as a joke, but it's one that a lot of people don't seem to get since they just keep on paying those "membership" fees.

They do send you the renewal bill like a month and a half before it expires, i just paid my sams renewal last week, it expires at the end of December.
Years ago i would use my dads card, used a few times with no problem until one day i went to check out and they told me " sorry the card isn't in your name" that got me ticked off a bit, i knew it wasn't their fault but just let someone go just this one time since they already spent 1 hour collecting all the items. That experience made me not go go to Sams for years, i would go to Costco, until my wife convinced me to open a membership there again because according to her Sams has smaller packs.
Is it your fault ? Yes
In my opinion since you had been a member there for so long they should have let you slide just one time because it wasnt the end of the world.

Don't see a problem with the store. Sounds like the card user did not keep up with their membership. Too many folks today want to pass the blame on to someone else for something they are responsible for. IMHO of course.

Looked at those places a couple times. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Cheap [censored] is what they're selling. Can't actually believe people eat that [censored]. Just about very cell in your body gets replaced every 100 days, about 3 months. The only materials are air, water, and food. And people think they're making out good by buying cheap, processed [censored] made of fat, refined sugar, and chemical additives. Only corporate American marketing could fool somebody into eating that stuff. But then look at the fine physical condition of the average American. Save yourself. See nutritionfacts.org. And have a happy thanksgiving.

I have a feeling that Costco would have handled it differently. The people working at Costco *love* their job. They would have probably suggested some work around for the way the cash register works. The person at the cash register had no way of doing the transaction but a good employee would have tried to call the manager and figured out an amicable solution such as one day pass or purchasing and immediately canceling the membership.

BJ keeps on sending us one day pass but when we went to the store and tried to check out, they told me that I was a member ten years ago and their policy does not allow one day pass for past members! So why in the world do they keep on mailing it to me by my name?

Between BJ, Sams Club and Costco, the people working for the respective clubs exude different quality. Anybody visiting the three chains, that would become obvious the moment you walk in.

The issue is twofold - one is that OP didnt recognize the expiration date. His own fault.

The other was the lack of willingness to pay to re-join. Paying the membership fee would have solved the problem, but with 50% discounts available on the fee, I get why one wouldnt. Id have complained to the manager to try to get the 50% if its well known that it is regularly offered.

If its not a regular occurrence, then OP should have stayed away until he found a membership discount, whenever that might be...

You're right about that.
Costco pays its people enough and provides a generous enough benefit package that they value their jobs.
Costco does have a much nicer vibe than the other two even if it doesn't represent any savings over any other no-fee chain.

Don't they send you emails or real mail about your membership expiring?

b.) You didn't know when your membership expired?
c.) You wouldn't have wasted an hour of your life if you simply went to the local grocery store.. preferably not last minute.

I don't see a logical reason to be upset with the store.

I worked 12 HR shift Wednesday got home and was asked to go to Sam's club. Also we were out of town until Tuesday 10pm. Snowed in 10hrs away.
I'm working 12 HR shift today, thanksgiving, and tomorrow as well.
The card is not mine. It is my wife's card, not mine. Even so how do you know the card is expired? Sure maybe she could have gotten an email in her junk mail and failed to mention it?
I wouldn't have gone there unless asked.

How could I possibly have recognized the expiration date?
I was given a card with zero expiration information on it.

Maybe she got some form of notification that it expired, I never saw anything in the mail.

The bottom line is they DONT have an expiration date on the card yet apparently have a VERY strict policy on not allowing you to purchase on a very recently expired membership.
That is the issue.
I believe it is done that way to force people into buying memberships at full price at the register.

Simple-for some people it's never their fault. Even though the original poster should have planned better and was clearly in the wrong, he blames the store rather than his own incompetence and lack of planning. In a subsequent post he thinks they should "bend over and take it in the rear" because of his mistake rather than man up to his mistake and learn a lesson from it.

Pop you ever been asked to go buy something?
Something that you were not in charge of planning?
I thought they could have been a little nicer at the store, regardless of my wife's week expired membership status.
I had never set foot in the sams club before.
What would you have done in my shoes POP?
Not what could have been done last week to prevent this.
Eagerly awaiting your response.

So I guess you bypassed all of the fresh meat, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables and went straight to the bargain brand frozen meals?
Plenty of good quality food to be found in any grocery store in this country, even Walmart.
Your post sounds a little like something written by someone newly brainwashed.
