Thanks Johnny. I had a low view of RP for a long time, but kept my mouth shut for the most part as I had no evidence. You have changed my view and were it not for the size of my stash I would certainly give RP a try. This thread (or at least Johnny's post) should be pegged the top of the forum so we don't have to go through this question every two or three months.

I can get RP for $5.99/qt after taxes with free shipping to my door. There are many places around here that sell M1 and Castrol products for $6+, ________, even walmart it $6+ after taxes.

Since this whole Mobil 1 Group III discussion came up I thought I would contact Royal Purple, so I did. I sent an email to David Canitz the Tech Service Manager for Royal Purple and asked him point blank, does any of your products contain Group III base stocks. Below is David's reply.

"Both the RP 5W20 and XPR 5W20 are synthetic products made with Group IV and Group V synthetics.

The XPR has more select base stocks and a more robust anti-wear package and would give higher performance but it is not an API Licensed product like our PCMO.

We currently do not use any Group III hydrocracked products in our production. There will be a small amount of diluent oils in either formulation consisting of what ever base stock the additive packages are dissolved in from the additive manufacture - these could be Group I or Group II base stocks."

Now I've known of David for quite some time and he is well respected in the oil industry. He has a chemical engineering degree from Marquette University and has been with Royal Purple for many years. If he tells me there is no Group III in their products I believe him.

He told me the PCMO line of product meets API SM/GF4 standards and is licensed by the API. I know right now most of the labels you will run across say SL on them, but I have seen some of the 5W20 and 5W30 with the SM labels. I'm sure as inventory turns more new labels will show up.

thanks, that's good to know, i can get RP locally for the same price as M1. RP gave me a decent UOA also in 5w-20.

Well, I now have even more confidence that I made the right decision when I switched to RP after the first 10,000 miles. Maybe I should have changed after the first 3,000 miles.

Could be the engine and/or driving conditions. I've used it in 3 engines: 2005 Ram 5.7L Hemi, 02 Toyota 3.0L V6 (sludger), and an 00 Dodge 3.8L v6 Caravan. All 3 are driven in congested Wash, DC traffic. The truck gets more highway miles. All the Highlander and Caravan get 6 month OCIs that average around 5,500 mi. The truck gets 3k mi OCIs. All 3, solid black after 1k mi. Quite using it in the truck due to alarmingly high Cu wear that dropped immediately to normal after returning to M1. Had better results in the Toyota. The Caravan suffered serious contamination during a dealer "throttle body and fuel injector service" that diluted the oil to the point that I experienced severe bearing wear accompanied with a huge Pb wear number. Can't blame the oil for that. Outside of those outliers, though, the wear patterns are no different than M1. Now trying PP and Quaker State Synthetic (Advanced and TorquePower).
