Seriously, the 0w-40 grade is one of the best oils out there these days if you need a bit more viscosity and don't want to pay too much.

Thanks SteveSRT8. I hear good things about the Mobil 1 0-40

Folks bad at math or economics see a $7.XX or $8.XX price tag and do not comprehend what they would be getting PER dollar. RP goes up to a 12K OCI, but they cannot understand it.

Again, since many here lack sufficient intellectual capacity or maturity to have a rational, fair discussion about RP, I humbly suggest this site ban all RP discussion going forward. Too much irrational RP hate comes out.

Name a synthetic that can not be used for up to 12K. There have been a few UOA's of PYB going up to 12K and a little beyond. M-1EP is good up to 15K yet costs less. So since M-1EP costs less than RP here RP it is overpriced.

Sorry to upset the Royal Purple cheerleaders, I do not wish any ill will toward the company but the price along with their dubious claims, false advertising, and reading testimonials on their site just turns me away from the product. Royal Purple meets the specifications printed on the bottle but that does not make it a good value.

Exactly. And, it depends upon where one lives and if they have any good relationships with suppliers. Here, at normal retail, I can get RP in 5 L jugs at a price that's competitive with M1 EP and the other top end oils. By the litre, from one of my suppliers, I get RP cheaper than vanilla M1.

So is it solely RP's fault that it's "expensive" or does some of the blame fall upon the place where one can get it?

I have run RP since approx 1990. I love the stuff. Have used it all pretty much in their product line. For me it has done nothing but perform so I continue to use it. I really don't care what others think and especially so when they haven't even used it. I pay for the oil that goes into my vehicle that I also pay for so only my opinion matters when it comes to my vehicle.

The argument about it being overpriced is also not always true and for 2 reasons...

1 - cost vs quality/return is nothing more than an opinion unless you have used the RP and some other oil performed better. I feel what I pay for RP is worth it so it is not over priced to me. If all I used was the cheapest oil I could find on sale then RP would be over priced.

2 - people continue to base all "price opinions" on comapring individual qts of RP( only way it is sold in 90%+ of stores )to 5qt bulk jugs at Wal-Mart( RP is not offered this way - some weights sold in gallon jugs ). If you compare RP in a qt bottle to the leading name brand oils( PU, M1EP, Castrol Edge, etc... )the RP qt bottles come out within $1 difference. Sometimes a few cents higher and sometimes actually cheaper. I actually provided prices on RP and the leading oils from various national parts stores and backed that up a while back on this site.

Bottom line is RP products are excellent. Maybe RP isn't for you if you prefer to get oil as cheap as possible. In that case stick to WalMart and 5qt jugs or sale deals wherever you can find them. If cost isn't always a factor then RP products are excellent.

Overpriced is subjective.

RP gear oil's have a good reputation, however, as so many have stated, their motor oil is overpriced (for most). Besides Walmart's 5 quart gallons Oreilly's, Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, etc will sell 5 quarts of synthetic oil with a real long drain oil liter for around $32, and those sales are going on at least every other month in one of those stores. How can a boutique oil compete with that? And then, of course, there is this:

if youre going to use higher priced oil, for drag racing or every day usage, whatever your plans, Use Amsoil SS (10.55$ qt) or Redline (11.49$ qt/ 46$ jug).

IMO better oils for roughly the same price range

though RP is good oil, I know people who swear by it (I also know people who swear by Lucas, Fram, STP, and other misc things that get bad raps) and they all have had good luck with it. I just think its over priced for what it is, if youre going to go big, go big.

9.79$+ a qt for RP, some for 16-17$, id go with the Amsoil or Redline for a few $$ more...

Now AAP here has RP for 7.49 a qt on sale, they also sell the XL Amsoil next to it for 7.50 a qt, so its dead on. Anyone elses AAP selling Amsoil products now? seems like 3 in this county are. NAPA does too. Hmm

How does the newer API rated RP compare to the older RP formula??

I just picked up some (SN) up last week and am looking forward to trying it.

The problem I see about RP is that it's very hard to prove RP is better than other big synthetic, let alone it's retail price and lack of 5qt jug.
My mentality is follows:
1) If i drive an econo box,I try to find cheapest or something similar that meet the spec.
2) If i drive a nicer car (Benz, Porsche), I use M1 or something equivalent.

I do see that lots of tuner like RP, not arguing with them, just use what works.

Good info. Most anyone can read through the hype and see Baloney in their claims.

Lines like "NAD recommended Royal Purple discontinue claims such as “Increases horsepower and torque by as much as 3 percent,” “Reduces Engine Wear by 80 percent,” “Superior Oxidation Stability” and “Provides Film Strength Up to 400 Percent.” don't help them any, as anyone with any real intelligence can see the hype.

It's called marketing. Some are more vulnerable to it than others. And all the oil makers do it.

I don't mind anyone calling it good oil. I do too. But only a dingbat would call it the best oil.

I fail to see the value in Royal Purple. If I want to use a specialty oil, I look to Amsoil and no further. With recent price increases of OTC products, and with a preferred customer membership, Amsoil's prices are pretty good.

I would go with amsoil you can get it for cheaper and when you do the long drain intervals with it like they recommend it will save you a lot of money in the long run and I now use Amsoil and plan on stick with it. Make sure you get there oil filter also for the long drain intervals.

A quart of RP may be less than $1 more expensive than a quart of Mobil 1 or similar. However, no smart buyer buys Mobil 1/Castrol Edge/Synpower either in quarts or big jugs at auto parts store, unless it's on sale. When they're on sale, the quarts drop in price significantly, very much to big jug levels (per quart). RP on the other hand never seems to go on sale and is only available in quart bottles.

For one, there will be different ZDDP levels, and the latest API grades will not have Synerlec, unlike the older versions or the HPS oils.

Such jugs are available up here. If you check RP's site, you'll see that 5 quart and 1 gallon jugs are available, depending upon grade.

Two of the best UOAs my truck has ever produced were on RP. While I concur with the general dislike and mistrust of their advertising, I can't deny that it worked very, very well in 5.4L Ford. And I'm not saying it "felt" great, was "quieter" or "felt more powerful." It delivered two great UOAs, one at 10K miles. If you are interested enough, look up my old UOAs. Not all RP UOAs are as good as mine, but you can say that about any oil. Sometimes it's a good fit. Sometimes it isn't. BTW, I regard UOAs primarily as an oil health indicator and that's how I use them... to gauge the OCI.

That said, I put RP in the same basket as I do other high end boutique oils... the one marked "marginal ROI" (for me at least). It's been amply demonstrated that mineral oils do a great job in normal circumstances... the place in which I find my equipment operating. Low stress, great operating environment (never less than a 10 mile run, most times over 20). The extra capability/durability offered by the syn is just extra money out of my pocket...just as buying a Porsche Cayenne (a dream vehicle of mine) is for the use I would put it to (not to mention the hit on my finances). I'm pretty good at separating need and want.

I've been slowly evolving into long OCIs.. a coupla thousand miles with each OCI and I've been able to do some long runs on good mineral oils. At the moment, I'd rather run a $4 mineral oil 10K miles (which I have done) than a $10 syn for 15K. That could change with the addition of bypass filtration. Once the limit of mineral oil have been tested in that context, I may have to try a syn and see what that offers. Always willing to adjust my parameters. Of course at the rate I'm going, my vehicles may be regulated/legislated out of existence.

LOTS of people buy those synthetics in qt bottles. It may be because their sump takes less than 5 qts and they don't want to deal with the left over from a 5qt jug or many sumps take more than 5qts which requires a few qt bottles as well. Lots of people won't shop at Wal-Mart as well. The main point made was when comapring qt bottle costs RP is no more expensive than the others.

PepBoys routinely offers RP oil for 5qts w/ an RP filter for $40 or just 5qts for $35 so I would say RP can compete. I have purchased RP through various online retaiilers like SUMMIT and JEGS who had it on sale similar to PepBoys. We don't have any O'Reilley's here but people have posted here before of good deals(sales ) there too.

This price issue about RP being so much more expensive is just myth and misunderstanding.

We shall see how Royal Purple does for my car. I picked up a 10qt case some time ago for $20.00 on Craigslist. I will wait until my 2nd fill is finished and get a analysis. I want to see if it shears in my Chrysler 300, I know the 5W30 seems to( looking at some u.o.a on here). Shearing doesn't bother me if the wear numbers are good. I will post when I do mine, it will be another 7,000 miles. Which only takes me less than 3 months to do or less.

every once in awhile Pep Boys will have it on sale.
Do you have to have it? No....
Are RP products excellent? Yes....

And I would put a RP oil filter up against any brand...(Amsoil is similar)

Some of these boutique brands people bash, actually do deliver.

Just serviced the trans' with some Amsoil ATF... good stuff also.

lol, everytime RP is mentioned a heated debate flares...

Then someone will mention that amsoil is not that good, or 4 ball test, etc.. then Pablo has to defend the brand name.

Myself, have i used RP or Amsoil products/ yes, and I believe it was a good value.

Do I run on Michelin tires? No, I use a cheaper brand and change out every 3 years and keep fresh rubber, deep thread. Somewhat like those who prefer a more frequent oil change with dino, rather than a EOC with a syn......
